Pakistan & Russia agree to give fresh impetus to bilateral & economic ties
BEIJING, Oct 14 (APP): Pakistan and Russia on Wednesday agreed to re-launch their relationship and re-engage each other to strengthen their bilateral and economic relations, in a bid to give new dimension to their ties. Prime Minister Yusuf Raza Gilani and his Russian counterpart Vladimir Putin, who met on the sidelines of Shanghai Cooperation Organization here, vowed to adopt a policy of understanding in all fields of mutual interest.
The meeting scheduled for thirty minutes, lasted for one hour and fifteen minutes and discussed several important issues including fight against terrorism.
Prime Minister Gilani in an exclusive talk with APP said his interaction with Russian prime minister was held in a meaningful, important and friendly environment.
There was unanimity of views on all issues of mutual interest, he said, adding that Pakistan and Russia agreed to adopt regional approach towards dealing important challenges.
Gilani said Prime Minister Putin supported Pakistans stance on war on terror and offered to increase the capacity-building of its law enforcement agencies.
The Russian Prime Minister agreed to pursue the policy of counter-terrorism for ensuring regional peace, he said.
Prime Minister Putin acknowledged Pakistans role in overcoming domestic challenges of terrorism and extremism, and expressed sympathies for loss being incurred in this regard, he said.
Prime Minister Gilani said he conveyed to Russian prime minister that his country could play an important role in eradicating terrorism and extremism from the region.
He said Putin agreed to support Pakistans membership in Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO).
Gilani endorsed Putins suggestion for giving new dimension to the economic cooperation between Pakistan and Russia.
Later Pakistans Ambassador to China Masood Khan told APP that there was warmth and good chemistry between the two leaders as they met for the first time.
He said both leaders engaged each other on entire system of Pak-Russia relations and expressed to take actions to make it more productive.
Both leaders expressed their strong desire to re-engage each other and re-launch the relationship to help resolve regional issues, he said.
Putin said Pakistan was an important country in the region and Russia would support Pakistan and Indias composite dialogue.
The two prime ministers agreed that collective regional efforts were required to eliminate terrorism from the region to usher in peace and stability, and redirect all energies towards economic interaction among the members of SCO.
Both leaders agreed to hold the first meeting of the already established Inter-Governmental Commission in the coming December.
Prime Minister Putin said Moscow would be interested in exploring cooperation in the fields of oil and gas and would be supportive for the completion of Iran-Pakistan gas pipeline project.
Both leaders said although the relations between Pakistan and Russia had developed over a period of time, yet there was a need to increase the volume of trade between them.
Russia agreed that it will actively support projects to upgrade Pakistan Steel Mills and to lay new railways tracks in Pakistan, the ambassador said.
Putin said Russia would like Pakistan to play a pro-active role in resolving regional issues.
