ISLAMABAD: The Pakistani government has raised the issue of "respecting the human and legal rights" of Dr Aafia Siddiqui, a Pakistani neuroscientist and mother of three jailed in the US for almost a decade, with US Ambassador Alice Wells who visited Islamabad on Tuesday.

"Government of Pakistan has been raising the issue of Dr. Afia Siddiqui with US authorities regularly. Pakistan's CG (consul general) in Houston pays Consular visits to Dr. Siddiqui, periodically, to inquire about her well-being and conveys her messages to Dr. Afia's family if any," the Foreign Office said in a statement.

"The issue of respecting the human and legal rights of Dr. Afia Siddiqui was also raised in the meeting at MoFA with Ambassador Alice Wells on 6 November," it confirmed.

"The US side has promised to look into our request."

The statement further read that Foreign Minister Shah Mehmood Qureshi would soon meet with the sister of Dr. Afia Siddiqui in Islamabad.

Wells, the US Principal Deputy Assistant Secretary of State for South and Central Asia, was in Islamabad on Tuesday to follow up on Pakistani Foreign Minister Shah Mehmood Qureshi's meetings with US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo meetings in Washington last month.

A government statement following Wells' visit said US-Pakistan bilateral agenda including the upcoming Geneva Conference and the Afghan peace process were discussed. There was no official statement by the Pakistani government on discussions regarding Dr Siddiqui.

But diplomatic sources told Geo News that Pakistani officials informed the US officials of its concerns and conveyed position that fundamental human rights be taken into consideration in the case of Dr Siddiqui.

Dr Siddiqui has been in prison since 2010 on charges of attempted murder and assault on US military personnel during an interview with US authorities in Ghazni, charges which Siddiqui denies. She was sentenced to 86 years in prison at the Federal Medical Centre, Carswell, Fort Worth in Texas.

The development comes after the neuroscientist reportedly penned a letter to Prime Minister Imran Khan, requesting him to make efforts for her release.

On Tuesday, sources had said the Pakistani consul general in Houston paid Dr Siddiqui a visit on October 9 during which she made the request to convey her message to the prime minister.

"I want to get out of prison, my imprisonment in the US is illegal as I was kidnapped and taken to the US, Imran Khan had supported me in the past also. I have always considered him as one of my biggest heroes and wish to see him as the Khalifa of all Muslims. He should be careful of the munafiq around him," she said.

The sources had further said that Dr Siddiqui's request had been conveyed to the prime minister.

The United States has promised to look into a request made by Islamabad to review Dr Aafia Siddiqui’s imprisonment in view of respecting her human and legal rights.

Pakistan has been raising the issue with the US on a regular basis, the Foreign Office (FO) said on Wednesday.

Siddiqui has been behind bars since 2010 on charges of attempted murder and mounting an assault on US military personnel and is serving an 86-year sentence at the Federal Medical Centre, Carswell, Fort Worth in Texas.

The issue was also raised by Foreign Minister Shah Mehmood Qureshi in Tuesday’s meeting with US Principal Deputy Assistant Secretary of State for South and Central Asian Affairs Alice Wells.

“Pakistan’s Consul General in Houston Ayesha Farooqui regularly visits Siddiqui to inquire on her wellbeing, as well as, to convey any of her messages to family,” the FO statement read.

FM Qureshi is also set to meet Siddiqui’s sister in Islamabad soon.

On Tuesday, Siddiqui had penned a letter addressed to Prime Minister Imran Khan pleading her innocence and calling for him to help in her release.

FO sources had confirmed that Siddiqui gave the letter to Farooqui when she had come to visit her at the correctional facility in October.

You [Imran] have always lent your support to my release in the past, You have also always remained by hero,” the letter read.

Had Zardari or Nawaz balls, Pakistan would have made Aafia's case bigger than Asia bibi's case on world stage considering how a feeble lady was able to take down 2 armed trained American military personnel!

With stories changing and giving her 86 yrs in jail while those soldiers who terrorized and killed Afghani people as sport [kill squad or whatever shitter they call themselves] were given close to no punishment of such sort!

where are ngos and human rights org?

There are enough people on this forum alone which think that Aafia is a terrorist.

People who think a petite woman no matter how trained can disarm a 2 fully trained American soldiers (story ranges from disarming combat style to surprise attack) are either discrediting American training or down right stupid to buy such a story!

I am not here to pass fatwas of courage or about mental health of anyone.

It is however fashionable to label muslims as terrorist and sell them to even the lowest bidder for the glorification of ones ego. Aafia has a problem which is 3 fold. She has gotten hate because of her religious affiliation and her being ''immigrant''.

May Allah ease her burden.

You haven’t seen petite women in action.

So "armed" American soldiers are weak/ useless?
Depends on the soldier and the situation. Someone handling a situation calmly and like a gentleman with his gun shouldered or on the side may be disarmed easily.
