A disturbing pattern here. I recall in 1999, Pakistan from President/PM down and all the way to newspapers was screaming to high heavens about 'brave 700' and 'mujahideen' holding Kargil. As years passed, information seeped out about the role of armed forces.
Same in case of good old AQ Khan - from denial to eventual acceptance.
I recall Sartaj Aziz speaking a few weeks back about Pakistan supported terrorist groups - we all know officials have gone blue in the face denying a link in the past. Kasab was supposed to an 'Indian agent' till his village and family were discovered in Pakistan.
The list goes on and now this.
Frankly, looking at all the denials which prove untrue, I guess Pakistani state's reputation for trustworthiness must be sky high at the moment. Reminds me of the old joke about the USSR - you can't believe a rumour till it has been officially denied. While for the rest of the world, its an irritant, this experimentation with terrorists has real consequences for the innocent citizens - driven home every now and then when a school or a house of worship is attacked, or when polio workers are killed. Only an idiot would deny that these terrorists bred internally have caused far greater damage to Pakistan than any external enemy could ever have. I think it is time Pakistan comes clean about its past - only then can it clean up its house and make a fresh start. Don't do it for India, the US or for the World - just do it for your people.
