Friday, June 22, 2012 From Print Edition

LAHORE: Pakistan is the only regional country where power generation has declined in the last five years, as disclosed by the BP Statistical Review 2012.
:woot:

According to the report, Pakistan generated only 89.1 terawatt hours of electricity in 2011 against 98.2 terawatt hours in 2007.

On the other hand, electricity generation in Bangladesh increased from 31.3 terawatt hours in 2007 to 42.7 terawatt hours in 2011

and in India from 797.8 terawatt hours to 1,006.2 terawatt hours under the same period.

Since 2007, India added over 300 terawatt hours, Indonesia 40 terawatt hours and Malaysia 12.5 terawatt hours of electricity, while Pakistan reduced its generation by 9.1 terawatt hours from 2008 to 2011.

“This report should be an eye opener for our planners,” said Mohsin Syed, an energy sector expert. He said that the incumbent government claims that it has added 3,000 MW of electricity in the past four years, but the generation has actually declined, as is evident from long spells of load shedding.

In view of alternative energy sources, the report said that Pakistan has not fully utilised its wind energy potential, whereas wind power generation stood at 1,600 MW in India.

The report further unveils that Pakistan does not produce biofuel energy, while India produced 286 thousand tons of oil equivalent biofuel in the same period.

Since 2007, hydropower generation has remained stagnant in Pakistan, as compared to other countries such as India. Pakistan generated 31.6 terawatt hours of hydropower in 2007, which declined to 30.6 terawatt hours in 2011. On the other hand, India generated 122 terawatt hours of hydropower in 2007, which increased to 131.6 terawatt hours in 2011.

By the end of 2011, gas reserves in Pakistan stood at 2,070 million tons, depicting a nominal increase of 0.2 percent over the previous year. In contrast, India increased it by 7 percent to 60,600 million tons by the end of 2011.

With regard to different energy fuels, prices of coal rose from $88 to $121.54 per ton and crude oil from $72.39 to $111.26 per barrel in 2011. Meanwhile, the LNG price averaged 7.73 per million BTU in 2007 and $14.73 per million BTU in 2011.

Primary energy consumption in Pakistan stood at 65.1 million tons of oil equivalent that increased moderately to 67.6 million tons of oil equivalent in 2011. In China, it India from 415.5 million tons of oil equivalent to 559.1 million tons of oil equivalent under the same period.

Power generation declines in five years - thenews.com.pk

Forget about India, Indonesia, Malaysia, pakistan even lags behind Bangladesh which increased its power generation capacities but in pakistan power generation capacities decreased

This is due to the increase of population.
No control of population, No campaign these days to stop population.
Hence more problems:hitwall:

You don't get it do you????????

The news says "while Pakistan reduced its generation by 9.1 terawatt hours from 2008 to 2011."

It means pakistan is generating less power in 2011 then it was generating in 2008.

Its nothing to do with the population. Population increases demand but how can it reduces the power generation or production????? :woot:

According to the report, Pakistan generated only 89.1 terawatt hours of electricity in 2011

Against 98.2 terawatt hours in 2007.

This is purely due to the corrupt government. This is the absolute worst government in Pakistan history. They have broken all records of bad governance and corruption. :hitwall:
Elections are just around the corner and these people will soon be shown the door

Rawalpindi set for water catastrophe

* Khanpur Dam to dry up by July 1

* Officials accused of receiving bribe for water

* Capital residents without water for 48 hours

Rawalpindi: The people of Rawalpindi were warned on Thursday that the Khanpur Dam could provide water only until July 1, if there were no rains. On the other hand, the Rawalpindi Cantonment Board has sought cooperation of the citizens in preventing water from being wasted.

Cantonment Executive Officer Rana Manzoor Ahmed Khan, talking to this agency on Thursday, urged the public to take precautionary measures like avoiding car and motorcycle wash at homes, besides excessive use of water in floor-cleansing so that smooth water supply in residential areas could be ensured.

He said ban has been imposed on use of water at service stations. He said four teams have been constituted to check the violation of the ban. Those violating the ban would be fined Rs 10,000. He said tube wells would not be enough to meet the requirement.

Meanwhile, the residents of Block 15E (Category-III) of Sector G10/2 of Islamabad are not receiving water for the last 48 hours.

Alamdar Naqvi, a resident of the block, told APP on Thursday that residents of his area and those of Blocks No 3, 4, 9 and 13 were facing discriminatory treatment from the officials concerned (Water Supply Directorate).

He said that there were 24 blocks in the locality and only the above-mentioned four blocks were facing acute water shortage for the last three months.

Water could even be seen overflowing from the water tank of Block 19E, going to the drain, he said and added that they had lodged many complaints with the CDA, but to no avail.

He accused the CDA officials of taking bribe from the residents of other blocks in order to provide full water supply to them. The residents are being punished by the CDA officials for not greasing their palms,” he alleged.

Sharifullah Khan, another resident of Block 15, urged the CDA chairman to look into the matter and direct the officials concerned to provide water supply to them. app

I've posted the raw numbers from the report. Any Pakistani care to compute their meaning in Kwh per capita?

whats with all the smilys in your post AF....... In every post, Seriously?

You know posting smilys dont improve your post quality..... it will stay as it is....

On Topic. it seems like our new PMs promise which he did in 2007 was all BS. The reason could be lack of maintanence because of which some power generators and now out of order (thanks PPP). Also the debt circle could be the reason as our power generation declined Unless they meant power generation capacity.

Do these numbers include the considerable power generation by individual sources such as generators and solar panels? Also, what about increased efficiencies by using CFLs and power inverters etc?
