ISLAMABAD: Pakistan is working on a plan now to sign a government-to-government oil import agreement with energy-rich Russia in a move that will lessen Pakistan’s excessive reliance on Middle Eastern countries.

At present, Pakistan is importing oil from the Gulf Arab states including the United Arab Emirates (UAE), Kuwait and Saudi Arabia. For meeting gas needs, it is purchasing the commodity from another Gulf country, Qatar.

According to sources, the proposal for oil import from Russia was discussed in ministerial-level dialogue between Pakistan and Russia in Moscow.

Pakistani and Russian representatives noted the interest of Rosneft Oil Company of Russia and Pakistani companies in the trade of crude oil, oil products and liquefied natural gas (LNG). In that regard, due diligence may be conducted and relevant arrangements including an inter-governmental agreement may be considered.

.
WOW

A very very unlikely move.

But a very very crucial move if it happens.

Tables will turn

.
I wonder if it is being done to aggravate the yanks! who knows.

. .
They can add Russia too in pool of oil importing but don't put all eggs in 1 basket.

. .
Pakistan has to import oil so why not do it from Russia and get some influence on the New Super Power.

Pakistan is surrounded in an energy rich region, importing from Russia is coupled with political motives as well.

.
How is it beneficial exactly? In the big scheme of things Pak's oil imports don't amount to much and dividing that further between the middle eastern countries and Russia will make Pak's share of imports from Russia look like peanuts. So in that case it would just be better to continue buying from the middle eastern countries bcuz of lower transportation costs bcuz we r not about to have any influence over the Russians with that tiny slice of oil/gas import.

.
It does not make any sense to me.
Why would pakistan choose a difficult way to import oil ?
Risky route and distance gonna make it expensive.

The political motive is there but there are more strategic motives behind it as well. We saved $4.5 billion on oil in just 2016 and it has increased in 2018 so we can get a great influence on Russia with buying oil from them and the OBOR will make it easy for Pakistan.

Still a long route and much difficulties.
I would recomend you to visit google map and watch it carefully.
I think middle eastern side is much easier and shortest route.
