Pakistan moves to install nationwide “web monitoring system”

Sandvine’s PacketLogic Devices Used to Deploy Government Spyware in Turkey and Redirect Egyptian Users to Affiliate Ads

Key Findings
  • Through Internet scanning, we found deep packet inspection (DPI) middleboxes on Türk Telekom’s network. The middleboxes were being used to redirect hundreds of users in Turkey and Syria to nation-state spyware when those users attempted to download certain legitimate Windows applications.
  • We found similar middleboxes at a Telecom Egypt demarcation point. On a number of occasions, the middleboxes were apparently being used to hijack Egyptian Internet users’ unencrypted web connections en masse, and redirect the users to revenue-generating content such as affiliate ads and browser cryptocurrency mining scripts.
  • After an extensive investigation, we matched characteristics of the network injection in Turkey and Egypt to Sandvine PacketLogic devices. We developed a fingerprint for the injection we found in Turkey, Syria, and Egypt and matched our fingerprint to a second-hand PacketLogic device that we procured and measured in a lab setting.
  • The apparent use of Sandvine devices to surreptitiously inject malicious and dubious redirects for users in Turkey, Syria, and Egypt raises significant human rights concerns.

I think company is canadian so it will help spying for u.s instead of monitoring , also there are many indians working in such IT companies in western world ,it would be much better we develop our own such system

@ps3linux much awaited system but still under supervision of foreign company.
He has nothing to do with that,it much awaited step in right direction.
@Foxtrot Alpha

I don't want to elaborate more, but if its a Canadian company I wouldn't doubt it much, people who are not in to IT like us would think specially media-w*ores that the govt is bend upon curbing people's independence by monitoring whereas it is a long awaited project which should have been done over a decade ago.

It works both ways and specially helpful in identifying and neutralizing threats like this one, not ideal but its a start:

Report: Smartphone malware targeting Pakistani officials

Associated Press

Oct 23, 2019, 5:02 PM

ISLAMABAD (AP) — A security firm says fake smartphone apps laden with malware are targeting Pakistan's military and government.

A report Wednesday by Canadian company Blackberry identifies new espionage campaigns attempting to steal sensitive data from mobile devices.

Blackberry says it doesn't know who is responsible for the campaigns but says it likely involves state-sponsored hacking groups.

The report says one of the fake apps promised news about Kashmir while others mimicked a pornography website and a philanthropic organization.

The apps often utilized Google's Android operating system and were distributed on social media messaging services such as WhatsApp.

Blackberry, a former mobile phone giant now shifted to the security business, says the campaigns reflect a global trend of hackers targeting mobile devices because people trust them and use them for work and play.

It's a welcome step in right direction. Most of people have no idea, how it would be useful if
utilized to full extent.

A much awaited right step in right direction to block pornographic/child pornography and anti-state propaganda from internal/external sources.
The whole world is implemented/implementing such monitoring systems.
Why so much hue and cry on Pakistan's initiative?

Bhai take a hint CIA is not the only agency in the world which has research and analysis front companies, business/trading concerns and it is not the only one to have established drug smuggling network. They have the largest global drugs business end to end from poppy production to distribution but they are not the only ones.

Wouldn't it be better to get chinese system something like hikvision surveillance as it's quite effective in china.

After Huawei safe city project "suspicious cards", rootkit found in lenovo laptops/dell laptops/PCs/routers/keyboards given as donations to some sensitive departments (one of them was found by yours truly) it'll be unwise to go for the same route again, besides it is always better to diversify your portfolio.
