Washington: A prominent Afghan lawmaker on Friday asked the US to stop all financial and military aid to Pakistan, including sale of F-16 jets, and impose economic sanctions, saying that the Pakistani government was providing safe havens to terrorists.

"We ask the US Government to stop all its financial and military aid to Pakistan, including F-16, and impose tough economic sanctions on Pakistan because of its support to terrorist group," Mohammad Naeem Hamidzai Lalai, a member of Afghan Parliament from Kandahar city said.

Lalai is currently on a visit to the UN headquarters in New York and Washington wherein he has been meeting members of the international community, US Government officials and Congressmen briefing them about the continued terrorist safe havens inside Pakistan.

"Instead of the US helping Pakistan with military aid, they can help Afghanistan with the same exact aid. Not only Pakistan has provided safe havens to terrorists, they have also violated the international border and attacked the Afghan security force inside Afghanistan," he told PTI.

Lalai said he and other members of the visiting Afghan delegation has been telling the US official and lawmakers that the US Government should not help or support those countries who train and support terrorist organisation.

"Instead sanctions must be imposed on such countries, to stop them from doing so," he said.

"The United States has to realise that the roots of terrorism cannot be eradicated unless its financial aid to Pakistan is stopped. The earlier the better," he said and warned that the government and people of Pakistan are getting ready to take action against the country if it continues with its current policy.

Prominent among these include launching of civil movement inside Balochistan and border areas of Pakistan.

"We can go to the extent of shutting down the Pakistani Embassy in Kabul," he said.

"These terrorist groups are all trained and raised in Multan, Punjab and other parts of the country. They not only killed innocent Afghan citizens, they have also inflicted heavy casualties to the Americans in Afghanistan," he said.

"The American Congressmen, Senators all know this," he said.

"I am not saying that every Pakistani is a terrorist, but every terrorist has a link in Pakistan. They are either trained or their finances are linked with Pakistan," Lalai said.

Who takes the statements of the Kabul government serious? Pakistan is not beholden to Afghanistan or to the US. It's beholden to its people and its national interests. Why should that be called duplicity? Pakistan has for a long time maintained that the Taliban deserve a place in the negotiating table. It's only very recently that the US has came to share this wisdom. Now Pakistan is being expected to fight the Taliban and at the same time bring them to the table? Talk about duplicity!

Anyways let's not hijack the purpose of this thread.

In this all the clutter have you forgotten that all parties but including US and Afghan Unity Govt were ready for talks with Taliban but Taliban despite promises, just used lull of talks to regroup and attack Afghans all over again. They are not interested in talks and that much is clear by now. They just want to use the breathing space offered by talks to consolidate. Even a blind man can see this.

Hence we are at a state where US and Afghan have given clear indication that Taliban would be punished for it's duplicity and there will be no more talks with militants. Every one who wants peace can come and talk abut offensive against Taliban will go on.

I see you cheerleading Taliban but do you forget what your precious Pashtun Taliban were upto when they were given a free run of the place? The along with Osama were responsible for 1000s of deaths, terrorism, rape, child killings and basically every crime under the sun. They are no angels, they are a mad dog who must be bought to heel or shot down.

I have no problem with someone wiping off Taliban. News will make my day. Sadly though, one has to look at things as they are not as we wish them to be. And the reality is Kabul government has utterly failed despite taking money twice the amount it took to rebuild Europe after WW2. So there is that. You are most welcome to try the punish thing. Send in the mighty Indian army. Drop me a line and do tell how did it go.

Taliban will not come to negotiations if ANA is loosing district after district to them. Do not blame Pakistan for their incompetence. We are not their guardian angels. If Kabul government can not get its actually together, we will push back refugees and enroll our Pashtun tribes enmass for border control. They have had enough from these refugees and will keep them on the other side. Let Afghans deal with economic repercussions of influx of 6 million or so refugees. If Afghans, US, India and world powers are so eager to hurl allegations then we are under no obligation to keep extending favours. We have our own country to look after. We will look after Pakistan first.

You guys are more than welcome to look after resettlement of 6 million refugees in Afghanistan while fighting Talibans at the same time. We will cheer for you.

in last July/august there was the third round of talk between afghan taliban and afghan govt. everyone was set on ceasefire agreement but NDS release information about the death of Mullah Omar. and that talk went into vein..
and yet everyone is blaming us for not convincing afghan taliban for talks..
