Pakistan need attack helicopter, PA has enough transport helicopter. Because attack helicopter is the best escort in this terrain, plus very agile. Sometime ground troops need no time delay support. And only platform which need least preparation is attack helo. Plus in any rescue operation, PA transport helo need consistent surveillance in surroundings. How a transport helo can perform as attack helo ?....it beyond my knowledge..Followed so many videos and scenario and came to conclusion , specifically for this type of terrain, PA need fully equipped LOTS of helo.

Forget Apache. Pakistan army has AH-1 cobra helicopters which old models. where AH-1W super cobra are more advance then AH-1. AH-1w super cobra used by US Marine Corps. If Pakistan got those or upgrade AH-1 to AH-1w super cobra still it’s an achievement.

I totally agree with pakomar why have dreams something you can't even get while there still might be a chance to get something else that is righ tin front of your eyes! I would put push for more cobra's and upgrades plus push for new super cobra's!

No sir, A helicopter requires lot of time for preparartion and subsequent maintenance for a single flight. Cobra has endurance, of 3 hours. but for a single sortie, it requires 2 hours of preflight inspection and maintenance. Then helicopters have to undergo scheduled/periodic maintenance inside the hanger, and downtime may vary from few days to a month. Like fighters, helicopters have a limited loiter time. They cannot be readily available to provide close support to Army on ground.

A transport helo cannot perform an attack role, but Air Assault role.

Transport helo are not capable of precision strike. Specially when combat zone is civic area and to avoid collateral damage. This type of situation only attack helo will do the job. Even if it takes 2 hours of prep, even then operations are well co-ordinated and aviation always pre-programmed about the movement of ground troops.

But attack helos alone cannot do the job in Counter-Insurgency Operations.

When Operation Rah-i-Rast was launched, some exclusive footage was shown on GEO TV. It showed troops fast roping from MI-17 Helicopter, while Cobras provide top cover. In other TV footages, Ecuriuel and Bell 412 helicopters are also shown.
So we have atleast 4 types of helos, performing their role in COIN ops.
The role played by the different helos may be
Ecuriuel
Providing area recon of the area where an operation is to be launched, before the launch of operation. Then acting as command and control bird, during the course of action, also providing medevac facility.
Cobra
Can be called as ariel weapon plateform. After ariel scouts are out of area, do, what artillery do before start of the offensive softening up the target, providing suppressive fire so that enemy keeps head down, also it takes few designated targets by precision strikes of TOW. Then provide top cover to troops comming in Bell and 17.

Bell 412
It has door mounted MG1A3, can carry 11 troops, combat ready. Bring the first phase of assault troops. They are the first on ground. Their role may include, securing of landing zone (LZ), preparing LZ to take main assault force in MI-17(meaning clearing areas, establishing air-ground communication network and assault force coomand point on ground. Bell 412 rapidly drops and take off, to bring new assault force (Recall Mel Gibson's We were Soldiers)

MI-17
After bells are out, area is secured, command and communication is established, Then the cavalry is called in. MI-17 brings the main assault force, which after dismounting from hels, push forward to target, and do the main battle.

The extarction of troops are in reverse order, MI-17s first, then Bells, and Cobras are last to exrtract from area, along with scouts.
So its a synergy of various types of helos, each having a distinct role and task, thus having idiosyncratic importance.

I thought US services were using AH-1Z or converting their Cobras to that configuration. Correct me if I am wrong.

AH-1W super cobra is the best technology helicopter in which US is afraid giving away to Pakistan and then China to gain valuable tech. US don't agree to sell any countries that they don't want. I agree, we NEED alot of attack helicopters in eliminating terrorists. :hitwall:

Remember, F-15 fighter is still the best and top secret, they don't even sell to Pakistan. To my understanding, all fighters have different roles and different targets to attack.

Do we've Apachi? & how many fighter helicpohter do we've?:pakistan:

We dont have Apachi.

DAWN.COM | Pakistan | France to provide combat copters

pakistan ordered 20-25 of these fighters.

ISLAMABAD: France will provide Tiger combat helicopters and military equipment to Pakistan to enhance its capacity to fight terrorism.

This was stated by Admiral Edouard Guillaud, Military Personal Staff Adviser to French President, during a series of meetings he held here on Thursday with top political and military leaders, including President Asif Ali Zardari, Prime Minister Syed Yousuf Raza Gilani, Chairman of Joint Chiefs of Staff Committee Gen Tariq Majid and Chief of the Army Staff Gen Ashfaq Parvez Kayani.

Official sources said that helicopters to be provided by France would be equipped with ground-to-ground missiles with semi-active laser seekers with a range of over 8km.

The multi-role helicopters have modern avionics and radars and can be equipped with anti-tank missiles.

Admiral Guillaud commended Pakistan’s determination and resolute action to clear its soil of terrorists and eliminate extremism.

An official of the French embassy said the visit of the delegation led by Admiral Guillaud was a follow-up to French visits by President Asif Ali Zardari and Army Chief Gen Kayani.

‘The fight against terrorism is a key matter of concern for the international community. Within the framework of our common goal to fight terrorism, this visit aims at strengthening our bilateral cooperation in the field of defence and security,’ he said.

He said France’s objective was to offer political and military cooperation and support to Pakistani authorities and strengthen their fight against terrorism and extremism.

‘France wishes to contribute to regional security and stability through reinforced dialogue on these matters.’

During the delegation’s meeting with President Zardari, the two sides decided to extend ties, especially in the field of defence, and the use of civilian nuclear technology for peaceful purposes.

President’s spokesman Farhatullah Babar said that matters relating to Pak-France cooperation in different areas, the Friends of Pakistan initiative, rehabilitation of internally-displaced people and fight against militants were discussed at the meeting.

During his meeting with the delegation, Prime Minister Yousuf Raza Gilani called for a roadmap for pragmatic cooperation in the field of civil nuclear energy.

He proposed establishment of a working group to work out a plan for nuclear cooperation.

Referring to the army operation against militants in Malakand division and tribal areas, the prime minister urged France and other countries to support Pakistan by providing military equipment and assistance to effectively deal with terrorists.

The prime minister warned against the possibility of militants crossing over into the Pakistani territory, particularly in Balochistan, in the wake of enhanced deployment of US and Nato forces in Afghanistan.

The prime minister thanked France for the assistance it pledged at the Democratic Friends of Pakistan meeting in Tokyo for the displaced people of NWFP and said that Pakistan was looking forward to the visit of President Sarkozy when frameworks on defence and security and counter-terrorism and on economic and energy cooperation would be signed.

Admiral Guillaud said he hoped the two sides would make progress in the field of trade and economy and in civilian nuclear energy cooperation during visit of French Secretary of State for Foreign Trades to Pakistan on July 20.

Admiral Guillaud also called on Gen Tariq Majid, Chairman Joint Chiefs of Staff Committee (CJCSC), at the Joint Staff Headquarters. Both leaders exchanged views on regional situation and discussed possible areas of expansion of defence and security cooperation.

Gen Majid thanked the government of France for its political support to Pakistan, approval of 12 million euros as initial humanitarian aid for displaced people of Swat and affirmation of assistance for capacity building of Pakistan forces.

Army Chief Gen Ashfaq Parvez Kayani held separate meetings at the General Headquarters with Admiral Guillaud and Gen Stanley McChrystal, Commander of International Security Assistance Force (ISAF), in Afghanistan.

Turkey, whose earlier request to buy US Cobra attack helicopters has so far been turned down on grounds that they are not available, is sending a military-led delegation to Russia today to further talks over the planned acquisition of at least 12 Mil Mi-28 “Havoc” attack helicopters as a stop gap measure in the fight against the outlawed Kurdistan Workers' Party (PKK), Today's Zaman has learned. A Turkish military delegation's planned visit to Moscow, expected to start today, comes in the midst of calls made by Turkish Chief of General Staff Gen. İlker Başbuğ in Washington for the US administration to sell urgently required military hardware to Turkey, including attack helicopters and unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs).Gen. Başbuğ made a June 1 speech at the annual meeting of the American-Turkish Council (ATC), held in Washington, during which he urged the US to carry the existing cooperation between the two NATO allies in the fight against the PKK from the existing US supply of real-time intelligence to a new phase of cooperation. “This cooperation should go beyond the existing intelligence cooperation,” Başbuğ said. Turkish fighters have been engaged in aerial bombardments of PKK targets in northern Iraq since December 2007, using US-supplied real-time intelligence, which has been critical in pinpointing PKK targets accurately to avoid serious collateral damage. The US has been using UAVs, satellites and Lockheed Martin-made U-2 High-Altitude Reconnaissance Aircraft (Dragon Lady) to supply Turkey with real-time intelligence on PKK activities in northern Iraq, while the Turkish military has been using Israeli-made UAVs purchased earlier as a stopgap measure to gather intelligence on the PKK inside the country. Turkish military analysts told Today's Zaman that Gen. Başbuğ meant with his statement in Washington that Turkish-US cooperation should go beyond the existing intelligence cooperation and that the US should sell military hardware to Turkey. Turkey has already applied to the US for the purchase of two General Atomics Aeronautical Systems, Inc.-made Predator UAVs, while an earlier Turkish demand for the purchase of up to 12 US Bell-made Cobra attack helicopters have so far been turned down by Washington due to their unavailability in the next several years. But the US's refusal to sell the Cobras to Turkey is believed to be because of Turkey's decision in 2007 to produce 50 Italian AugustaWestland-made attack and tactical reconnaissance helicopters, named “ATAK,” when the Italian company agreed to transfer technology so that helicopters meeting specific Turkish requests will be built at Turkish Aerospace Industries (TAI) facilities in Ankara. The first T129 attack helicopter (designated as the T129, a Turkish version of the A129 Mangusta) is planned to be produced in 2015. Ankara signed a deal worth around $2.7 billion with AugustaWestland in June 2008 for the production of 50 ATAKs, but the Turkish Armed Forces (TSK) declined AugustaWestland's offer of off-the-shelf A129 Mangusta attack helicopters as an interim solution on the grounds that the current A129 helicopters would not meet its urgent operational requirements. US companies did not bid in the attack project as they could not meet the Turkish contract terms and conditions, which sought a transfer of technology, prohibited under US law. According to a senior Turkish defense industrialist, had Turkey signed a deal with the US for the production of attack helicopters, he is confident Washington would have supplied Turkey with Cobras as an interim measure. Since the possibility of the US supplying Turkey with Cobra helicopters is now low, Turkey has sped up efforts to buy the advanced Russian Mi-28 helicopters that the TSK has been keen on buying. During the visit to Russia, a Turkish military-led delegation will learn the price and quick delivery options of the Mi-28 helicopters, the Turkish sources said. Turkey is believed to have five or six operational Cobras in its inventory. Attack helicopters are one of the key players in the fight against the PKK. Turkey entered talks with Russia's Rosoboronexport late last year for the purchase of 12 Mi-28 attack helicopters, as revealed by Today's Zaman at the time.
