Pakistan lost $50 million from airspace restrictions: minister

Flights from Delhi would be affected. Other major hubs would be Mumbai, Bangalore, Hyderabad, Pune will not be. Even Ahmedabad or Kolkata will not have a significant difference.
Lets use London and Dubai as referance to test your suggestion.

Check Kolkata Dubai. Maybe add 2% distance to avoid Pakistan. Similar to Mumbai London. Mumbai Dubai does not go anywhere near Pakistan. And these are for the non stop flights.

I am not sure those curved paths are just for illustration or are required. Will check that first.

KARACHI: Federal Minister for Aviation Ghulam Sarwar Khan said on Thursday that the Civil Aviation Authority (CAA) suffered a loss of Rs8.5 billion because of airspace restrictions since February in the wake of Indian aggression.

“It’s a huge loss for our overall [aviation] industry,” he said. “But this restriction hit India harder than Pakistan. The loss of India is almost double. But at this juncture détente and harmony are required from both sides.”

Addressing a press conference at the CAA headquarters, the minister said CAA’s restructuring was being executed purely on technical grounds, which would infuse new momentum in the organisation.

“The recent bifurcation of CAA functions into regulatory roles vis-à-vis commercial and service provider is simply to optimise its efficiency and performance. There is no proposal of any downsizing or rightsizing in the CAA after its bifurcation. We believe that new measures would spur growth in the national aviation and fetch far-reaching benefits,” he added.

Referring to the vision of Prime Minister Imran Khan, he said it was government’s priority to revamp the Pakistan International Airlines (PIA) and increase its fleet to 45 by phasing-in 14 new aircraft gradually by 2025.

CAA, PIA or ASF headquarters not being shifted to Islamabad

“Earlier, our domestic airlines did not have space to expand their operations because of open sky policies. Therefore, the open sky policy has now been switched over to fair sky policy which offers equal opportunities to domestic air operators to expand their business,” said Mr Khan.

He acknowledged that under the Aviation Policy, 2019, security agencies would be equipped with latest equipment and scanners to meet international standards.

The minister termed the resumption of British Airways flights a success of the Pakistani aviation industry and said that many other international airlines were approaching the government to start their operations in Pakistan.

“There is no plan to shift the headquarters of CAA, PIA or Airport Security Force (ASF) to Islamabad,” he replied to a question.

He, however, said approximately 60 per cent of activities related to aviation had already been shifted to the northern part of Pakistan and accordingly more manpower may be deployed at Islamabad.

This isn't something to be glossed over.
actually it is as India's economy is close to $3tn whereas Pakistan is just at around $300bn.
India can soak losses like that without much problem if need arises which is not to say its ideal, but we can.

Actually, it's the Air India(which had raised the rates to compensate) and bulk of international airlines that took loss not GOI but it's GOP that lost airspace revenue. Looks idiotic given the economic condition the country is in.

So india lost more than $1 billion USD from our air space ban we inflicted on them. While we just lost $50 million.

To put it in perspective, we didn't only humiliated india militarily for their air incursion and killing few of our trees, we also caused them 20x more damage in economic loss in aviation sector.

Damn man, Pakistan literally owned india mercilessly in every possible way (militarily, PR standpoint, diplomatically, and now even economically) :lol:
I am sure 50 million dollars hurt us more compared to 1 billion to india..

KARACHI, Pakistan (Reuters) - Pakistan's aviation minister on Thursday said that his country suffered loses of over eight billion rupees ($50 million) from airspace restrictions imposed since February which affected hundreds of commercial and cargo flights.


Pakistan closed its airspace after an attack by a Pakistan-based militant group in Indian-controlled Kashmir led to clashes between the nuclear-armed powers, adding flight time for passengers and fuel costs for airlines.

“Over eight billion rupees worth of losses have been suffered by the Pakistan Civil Aviation Authority,” Ghulam Sarwar Khan, Pakistan’s aviation minister told a press conference in Karachi.

“We don’t have exact figures of losses of their (Indian) civil aviation authorities but its more than ours,” Khan added.

Pakistan reopened its airspace to international civil aviation on Tuesday.

“Airspace restrictions were from both sides and it has been lifted by both countries,” the minister said.

@Nilgiri The 100/50 million dollar equation is nonsense. And I don't have to pore over the maths for that. Are we supposed to believe that Indian air traffic volume is only twice bigger then Pakistan? Are we supposed to believe that Bangkok, Kaula Lumpur and Sydney are traffic hubs for Pakistan outbound flights?

Or that Europe, Middle East, America are not Indian hubs for outbound flights? Te figure quoted do not even hold water at the minimal testing.

Excuses were running thin. Don't forget lot of flights are by western airlines. PMIK is off to USA. And it had been notified month ago that flights would be re-opened in July as the original date had passed.
Its for Indian airlines that is only air india that flies overseas. Rest are all global airlines that fly in.

Maybe you can tell that to Indus Pakistan who has drawn the straight lines.
I do not understand what @Indus Pakistan is trying to say by posting line on an atlas. Airline these days are very complex industry which are run by professionals on a margin of error that is not even the width of human hair.

The cities that you have mentioned will all be effected how ever cities that do have majority of flights heading westbound will be the hardest hit. You say that flights from Mumbai to London or New York will be safe, I'll tend to disagree.
My reasons are based on:
1) Geography ... The closer one is to the poles shorter is the distance. The closer one is to the Equator the longer is the distance. This is because Earth is not a perfect Sphere rather it is an "Oblate Spheroid". in lay-man terms Flat at the Poles and bulging at the Equator.

2) Wind direction and speed ... Aircraft are flown ideally with tail winds i.e wind at the back. Reason for this is that ground distance will be covered faster hence saving time, fuel and money. So airline flight dispatchers try to find favourable wind conditions and if they are close or in a jet stream.

3) Flight Crew Limitations ... These limitations are based of the approved flight and duty time limitation established by ICAO. i.e 35 hours per 7 consecutive days, 100 hours per consecutive 30 days and 1000 hour per consecutive 365 days. Then there are further flight and duty time limitations associated with timezone changes, compliment and pattern flown. i.e. 2 men cockpit Flight time 8 hrs Duty time 10 hours (note duty time starts 1 hr before blocks off and ends 45 mints after blocks on). or 2 men cockpit Flight time 6 hours duty time 12 hours with 4 sectors.

4) Aircraft positioning and scheduling ... An aircraft needs to be at the planed airport atleast 2 hrs before next flight be it from operating some sector or returning from maintenance. i.e an aircraft is scheduled to fly at 0600 hrs from Mumbai to Delhi it must be available at the gate at 0400 hrs. if it is an hour late the flight from Mumbai to Delhi would be delayed by an hour. and this would effect all other patterns flown by this particular aircraft and for Flight Crew the effect would be much grater.

The problem that hurts the most is 3 and 4. Air India did not have the capacity to continue operations as normal hence had to cancel flights and reschedule aircraft and crew. If Air India wanted to operate as per normal she would require another 40-70 Aircraft, 400 -700 more Pilots and 1000 - 1500 Flight Attendants.
