That seems like your saying the 90's are better..

Why would we go for the S20's then (if indeed we are as nothing has been confirmed)

and s 20 is nothing more than a scaled down version of yuyan class

The surprise factor would be not letting the enemy know what you have, once they know it, its gone. Subs operate solely on stealth, if that factor is comprised, the whole point becomes moot, Chinese or no Chinese AshM will make little difference at this stage.

A noise is a noise, it can be louder or mum but it can't be "different".The surprise factor is not how much the noise a sub makes, but where it is expected to be. Ever wonder why do ASW focus much on deploying a detection network rather than getting straight to the point where sub is hiding,destroying it and getting the job done. For example, a sonobuoy will detect an anomaly in noise if the sub is noisy. Or other sonar and data analysis systems will find it difficult to identify a quiet sub. But lets just do it in a simple way. Suppose you're the ASW guy, i approach you and tell you that your adversary has a sub which has XXX acoustic signature but I cant tell you where it would be right now. Suppose you're coast line covers the entire indian ocean, where would you start working from? You ll make guesses about probable locations by perceiving different would be scenarios, deploy your resources to in a hope that you would be able to find the sub. If noise is everything that U-212 should have a walk in park everywhere on this earth and everybody should be rushing for U-boats making all others go out of business. Operating and deploying a sub is more than just noise. A commander of deep submerged sub is as blind to situation as the hunter flying an ASW aircraft or operating a destroyer. Both have to often rely on intelligent guesses if acoustic sensors aren't getting the thing done. So long story short, submarine warfare is much more different from traditional hardcore warfare.

S20 submarine has depth of 300m without API same as Agosta's without api , after API upgrade the depth emerged to 348meters for agosta. So we can conclude that S20 ****'s are getting with api will have same depth. Furthermore the signatures of these subs cant be determined so early and by scaled version of yuan doesn't mean it isn't as good as yuan. as it was stated "The API and sensor suites from Yuan can be installed on request of customer". stop saying that agosta would be better at max they are equivalent. Why is it that asians tend to feel like west is always above in terms of technology. Even the predecessor of yuan "song class" penetrated the Battlegroup of USA without letting them notice.

1- Its called AIP (Air independent Propulsion)
2- AIP allows for more endurance by replacing the need for surfacing or using sub's snorkle to replenish the oxygen from atmosphere. And thus reducing chances of visual detection.
3- Although AIP system is not as powerful as the primary disel electric system of the sub, thus reducing the speed, it does produces minimal noise as well thus allowing sub to operate very quietly.

Can somebody explain how AIP helps in increasing the operating depth of a submarine ??

There is no Nuclear PN Submarine plan, so no need to discuss it.
Only DE SSK's of Chinese origin, which are already being discussed.

Get some top level naval source.. and you'll get the answer of this "Nuclear PN Submarine" ;)
