What's new

Pakistan is now a $300-billion economy "Growth rate hits nine-year high of 5.28pc"

Bangladesh still has a larger labour force since its population was historically higher until quite recently (72 million vs 68 million). It hasnt surpassed by nominal GDP per capita yet although it probably will have 2020. Pakistan also has a much higher GDP (PPP) so in reality Bangladesh is still far from reaching Pakistan's level of wealth although it probably will surpass it and India per capita eventually due to its higher gdp growth to population growth.

That's based on current projections which do not take into account the massive transformation CPEC and other related programs will have on Pakistan's economy. Also, one thing everyone fails to mention is one of the by-products of CPEC, the fact that China is overtly and covertly transferring to Pakistan advanced sciences and technologies which will greatly boost our economy and living standards. This is not just limited to our defence industry. Already, Pakistan's infrastructure is improving.

So Pakistan achieving that again is plausible and very believable, not twice the growth but closer to India and more.

Long term sustainable growth wise, it will take much more time for Pakistan.

Two key indices of long term base growth have been low in Pakistan for quite a long time now: investment rate (esp GCF) % of GDP and also credit/GDP (esp to private sector) ratio....which are probably the two most important drivers of base growth rate (and also absorb/release the most momentum):

http://data.worldbank.org/indicator/FS.AST.PRVT.GD.ZS?locations=PK-IN-BD-CN

Pakistan needs to sort that out over the next 10 years or so before it can come to 7%+growth rates sustainably long term (rather than relying on short term base-related rebound which musharraf regime somewhat tapped into).

This goes well past what CPEC promises, it needs much more govt reforms targeting skills-training and institutional capacity on the ground.

How much truth is in claim of 2% of GDP being cut every year because of electricity shortages?

Have not looked into it enough. It could very well be true, power is a very basic necessity now for almost any human activity.

Have the shortages been planned mostly (i.e set time during each day etc) or have they been unplanned/unpredictable mostly (anytime for variable length)? Former will have less impact on GDP than latter.

Anything less then 8-9% growth rate for Pakistan and similarly anything less than 7.5% for India is opportunity lost in my opinion.
Any way congrats to all Pakistanis for this milestone. All the best..

Mere conjecture. People said EXACTLY the same when China helped Pakistan become a nuclear weapons state. That the Chinese would not help Pakistan as the americans would severely punished them. That it was impossible for Pakistan to ever become a nuclear weapon state with or without Chinese assistance. That the whole idea was a white elephant.. blah blah blah. The dream still came true. Just as then so is now. The loudest alarm bells are ringing in the ears of the enemies of China and Pakistan. That's all.

Because Iranian president told you that? He is your childhood friend, isn't it? :)
The worst thing about PDF is that every Tom,Dick and Harry thinks of himself as a legendary historian. Though, they would be a big loser in their real life, probably struggling to keep-up with their expenses.
You're one such example. Keep thinking that whole world is coming after you as they don't have anything better to do lol..

Okay Historian of the century, so when did the Soviets intend to invade Iran via Afghanistan?

Goofy, dumbo, you can't say with that affirmative tone that Soviets invaded Afghanistan to conquer Pakistan for its magnificent, marvelous, incredible, exquisite, outstanding, immaculate and what not location. What their plan was, you just can't say anything. When they couldn't get settled in Afghanistan how they could have planned to go for Pakistan which was much better than Afghanistan? They would have add many options, had they got a hold of Afghanistan, but they couldn't. End of the story. We were talking about economy where I outwitted you every step of the way and now you're talking about soviet's invasion of Afghanistan. Grow up chick. Grow up, seriously, you and your so called friend who are trying to derail the topic. Afghan guru, grow up.
