SAFF Championship opener ‘not just another football match’, says Zavisa Milosavljevic

Dubai: Pakistan’s opening South Asian Football Federation (SAFF) Championship match against India next month is “not just another football match”, according to the Green Shirts’ coach Zavisa Milosavljevic.Pakistan and India kick off the 11-day, eight-team SAFF Championship on September 1 at the Dasarath Rangasala Stadium in Kathmandu, Nepal, where the top two teams from two groups of four will progress to the semis.Dubbed ‘The Group of Death’, with Pakistan and India also drawn with Nepal and Bangladesh in Pool A, there’s added incentive to win their opening game beyond just trying to establish regional one-upmanship usually reserved for cricket.

Milosavljevic, who previously managed at domestic and national level in his native Serbia — between coaching spells in Rwanda and Lesotho — told Gulf News: “I don’t feel any pressure. Mentally we are ready to play India.m“As a coach it’s just as normal as any other game. But I understand that for others, India and Pakistan is not just another football match. It will make reputations across the region and we will try our best for sure. “India is always a tough opponent. But at the same time this is the first game and it is most important that we win the match in order to qualify for the next round. If we win against India, I think we can go on to qualify and that’s the motivation. “If we can implement all that we’ve been working on we are sure to play well against India.”

In 23 matches against India since 1959, Pakistan have lost nine times, drawn 11 and won three and India have scored 27 goals to Pakistan’s 16. Pakistan’s last win was in 2005 and, to top it off, India are currently 21 positions above 167th-placed Pakistan in the Fifa world rankings. Despite the weight of history and statistics, though, Milosavljevic refuses to be overawed. “I’m satisfied with our group,” said Milosavljevic. “Others are calling it the ‘Group of Death’, but I don’t think so. During the group stages of the championship there are no two favourites. The chances are the same for all teams.”

In 10 editions of the SAFF Championship, India are the all-time leading champions with six titles. But Pakistan, whose previous best finish in this tournament is third (1997), will be hoping a good show against the rival can spark a footballing revolution. “There is great potential for football in Pakistan,” said Milosavljevic. “But football needs to improve its standards here. One of the crucial things is the league and youth competitions – there’s no youth league or foundation for the senior team. “If we can arrange leagues and employ professional coaches who can deliver knowledge to players, Pakistan will develop as a footballing nation, but it doesn't come automatically. Without quality and educated coaches we cannot expect any quality results in the future.”

Title is just like news headline which has nothing to do with article……:coffee:

The grouping seems odd with Pakistan, BD, Nepal and India in Group A.

It should have been more even.

True, the article was posted in Gulf news.......... I could have changed the title, but then posted as it is! Though not sure about it's relevance with the article!

I think the subject line has been framed like that to attract more viewers.

It will be India Vs Afghanistan in the final...

Afghanistan has surprised everyone in recent years. Most of their players are/were actually settled in Europe and their inclusion has raised the standard.

India is in same place where it was two decades ago...no significant improvement to mention...But still it is the most formidable side in the region.

Bangladesh is the team which upsets me most. With growing popularity in cricket their football is losing ground. They are nowhere their team in 80s.

Pakistan...Not known for football...They have also added foreign based Pak-origin players (including Jesh Rahman) but no achievement

Maldives...third best in the region ...their Ali Ashfaq is certainly the best player in the region after retirement of Bhaichung Bhutia...I put Ashfaq ahead of Sunil Chhetry...

Nepal...A tough team...plays in small passes...dominates the field but cant score goal... :P

Sri Lanka ...certainly ranked just above Bhutan at present. But it was a formidable team during Amanulla and Roshan Perreira...Not much expectation from them....

Bhutan....They have a nice player (I forgot the name) who plays in I-league for Lajang FC but overall a weak side...

India team is not strong enough this team... A poor team selection I dont know whether the coach saw the I-league matches or not..But can not accept inclusion of Rabin SIngh, Raju Gaikowad, Izumi Arata,Gourmangi who had very poor I -league. And what about Tulunga...he was never selected probably because of his height despite playing so well since he was a teenager; now suddenly when he is approaching 30 and lost much of his pace he is included. Rabin SIngh has been a lame duck for EB and gave more service to night clubs than his team...Gaikowad a giant hole in the defence..

And he dropped Subrata Paul, Rahim Nabi, Alwyn George,Jeje...Cant believe this...

However , one hope is there this team is for coming friendly...Wish the necessary changes will be made before SAFF...

I can see one team stands out among all of them and that is of AFGHANISTAN :))

They are good footballers and I am sure their team is better than any in both groups.

Good luck Afghanistan

Because almost all of their players are Afghan origin but citizens of European countries..some are settled in USA. They played where standard is much higher than South Asia and infra is better...

Unfortunately we cannot include Indian origin players due to our citizenship law. They talked with Micheal Chopra but he was not ready to give up his British citizenship...

NOP. Not because they are settled in EU or any other foreign country BUT football is taken as seriously and as standout game in Afghanistan as Cricket is taken in Subcontinent.
