Pakistan on Friday hiked its defence budget for fiscal 2012-13 by nearly 10% to Rs. 545 billion. Official budget documents presented in Parliament said a sum of Rs. 545 billion (about $5.82) had been allocated for the defence services, compared with Rs. 495 billion provided in the fiscal

year ending on June 30.
Further details, including allocations for the three services and weapons acquisition programmes, were not immediately available.

The budget documents further stated that the actual expenditure on defence during fiscal 2011-12 was Rs. 509.32 billion (about $5.45 billion), or Rs. 14.32 billion more than the allocation of Rs. 495 billion.

The allocation for defence amounted to 18.4% of the federal budget of Rs. 2,960 billion for fiscal 2012-13.

The Pakistan government has traditionally made defence allocations with the objective of maintaining conventional parity with India.

However, a crippling financial crunch has forced the government to balance military spending and expenditure on development and welfare programmes.

Expenses on the war on terrorism and cuts in defence aid by the US too have affected Pakistan's defence budget.

However, experts have said that the government often allocates funds for the military's special programmes and the nuclear weapons programme that are not reflected as part of the outlay for defence.

The education, health and future of pakistan don't get proper attention in the budget its sad, only a futile arms race that can't be win or sustained by pakistan.

Karachi/Sindh/Baluchistan is not getting is its due is long proven fact.

Seriously???? I doubt that. Pakistan's entire GDP is around $200 Billion isn't it.

$16 billion every day will make it 5.84 trillion per annum.
Karachi is no longer the highest contributor to GDP it comes at second number after Lahore.
Assuming Lahore contributes only 1 rupee more than Karachi that would add another 5.84 trillion.
Tri-cities (Silakot, Gujranwala, and Gujrat) combined contribute the highest, assume tey contribute 1 rupee more than Lahore that would make another 5.84 trillion. Now forget all other cities like Faisalabad, Hyderabad, Peshawar, Questta still the total would become 17.52 trillion. Whereas Pakistans total GDP for 2012 is around 7.46 trilliion.

Either you have no idea how many zeros are there in a billion or this figure came from the head office of master of all trades, Altaf Hussain Tun.

There is nothing mythical about numbers, you can add them and see if they m,ake any sense, rather than believing every brain fart of some corrupt politician.

well in my point of view our primary focus needs to be internal security , education and energy issue.
we need to utilize maximum amount of money in making ourselves a viable nation internally.
people are frustrated and destroying govt properties cos of frustrations in this scenario our focus need to be to correct internal issues. for me main threat to our survival is internal disharmony at every level in many ways. we need to educate people and provide them with better job facilities so that they can be good citizens and shun all kinds of lingual, racial and relogious extremisms.

More important would have been infrastructure...but cannot fault Pakistan in increasing spending on defense, what with its higher threat perception.

ISLAMABAD: Opposition Leader in the National Assembly Chaudhry Nisar Ali Khan on Friday declared his party’s protest, during the budget speech by Finance Minister Dr Abdul Hafeez Shaikh in the lower house of the parliament, as “people’s voice,” DawnNews reported.

Opposition lawmakers belonging to Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) hijacked the government’s unveiling of the new budget, trading punches during angry scuffles in parliament against power cuts and corruption.

Speaking to media representatives outside the parliament building, Nisar said that “whatever happened in there wasn’t good” however, he added that it was bound to happen at some stage as the current government has been acting “blind and deaf,” which could not hear public outcry.

The PML-N leader asserted that government’s attitude triggered the opposition to protest in such manner. “National Assembly will not be run in a democratic way anymore for the government as it has been for the last four year. We will not only protest in the house but on roads as well,” said Nisar as he threatened the government.

The opposition leader said that the poor masses of the country do not expect anything good form the budget as they are deprived of basic necessities of life. “Rulers have destroyed the country completely during their tenure in last four years,” he added.

:D fight on the floor is always fun.

@Thorough Lahore only has GDP of $40 billion and Karachi has GDP of $70 billion!!!!

All other cities are irrelevent

I agree with it. Pakistan should increase it more. If you look at the trend of regular terrorists attacks, the increment was really required in order to defend their country. And as we can read in the article, the US has decreased the dollars it used to give to Pakistan. (Though I believe that if Pakistan take actions on terrorists, she still has a chance of receiving dollars from US!)

In short, honeymoon period is over. Now you're on your own. Hence, we understand this increment.
