China will sell the Yuan-class diesel-electric submarines to its close regional ally in line with a contract that is already “in an advanced stage”.
World Bulletin / News Desk

Pakistan is to procure six submarines from China to counter “rising threats” from the much-larger naval power of the country’s neighboring rival, India.

According to media reports citing an unidentified senior defense official, the submarines, which will be delivered in three phases, are to be inducted into Pakistan’s relatively small navy within next two years.

China will sell the Yuan-class diesel-electric submarines to its close regional ally in line with a contract that is already “in an advanced stage”.

“Terms and references [of the contract] have almost been finalized. It will not take too long to be inked”, the defense official was quoted as saying.

Although, Pakistani media did not quote the total cost of the contract, an unidentified official at the Ministry for Defense Production told Anadolu Agency that the cost would be around $6 billion.

He said discussions about procurement of Chinese submarines had started in March 2011; however, these took three years to mature due to some “technical and financial reasons”.

Currently, Pakistan’s navy is operating five French submarines – three Agosta 90-Bs acquired in the mid-1990s and two Agosta 70s dating from the late 1970s. India’s navy has 15 active submarines, mainly Russian-made.

China is also to sell two 035G Ming-class diesel-electric submarines to Bangladesh by 2019, in line with a contract worth $206 million.

China has been Pakistan’s largest military partner, having been involved in various joint defense projects, ranging from production of advanced JF-17 Thunder fighter jets to marketing of locally manufactured Al-Khalid tanks.

Beijing has also been helping the South Asian nuclear state to develop its ambitious missile program.

no way it can 6 billion a type 214 probably cost 550 million dollar each comparing that 6 Chinese may cost 3 billion dollar . i think not 6 billion dollar but 6 billion RMB.

. . . . .
Not all , only 3 Agosta90B are AIP equipped while the two Agosta70s are not .

Which are going to be phased out... although they were upgraded as stop gap measure till the new subs arrrrrive...

P.S: how many indian navy subs have AIPs? not even the ones you are looking for will have them... And how many are actually operational?

The last 3 of the scorpenes will have them if DRDO comes with an AIP in time ..... Otherwise French AIP may be selected although there is no confirmation for it right now .

The next batch of subs P75I will also have AIP .
