This was the first time that the people voluntarily gave up weapons to help foster peace.

SWAT: A large cache of weapons voluntarily handed over to security forces by the people of Upper Dir last month was displayed to the media in Khwazakhela on Thursday.

The weapons – including anti-aircraft guns, machine guns, rocket launchers, mortars and a large quantity of ammunitions – were asked to be handed over to the authorities to avoid the possibility of the weapons falling into the hands of militants.

For the cause, the army had requested the elders of Upper Dir to urge the people to hand over any heavy weapons they hold by organising jirgas in different parts of the district. This was the first time in the region’s history that the people voluntarily gave up such a huge cache of arms and ammunition to help foster peace.

“Their spirit is worth appreciating and I thank the people from the bottom of my heart for cooperating with us,” said Major General Ghulam Qamar while speaking to the media. He said the positive response from the locals is a living proof that they are peace-loving people.

He further said that the Pak-Afghan border near Dir and Chitral has been sealed by the army, which has been carrying out its duties in an effective manner to make sure no terrorist is allowed to enter the country.

Good.

Pakistan NEEDS to have stricter gun/weapon control laws and a deweaponization drive.

The fact that normal civilians have: anti-aircraft guns, machine guns, rocket launchers, mortars and a large quantity of ammunitions, etc is scary!

.
Looks like they gave up the " Darra " weapons that were jamming anyway, but kept the original Russian and Chinese Klashnikovs.

Civilians have anti aircraft guns, and machine guns?
And then ISI says that India is supplying then with arms. Who needs to supply when even civilians in Pak have better guns?

you are obviously ignorant of pakistani tribal belt history thats why you are saying this..
tribal areas had heavy weapons since the 1700s thats why british were unable to subdue to them the british lossed over 18 thousand men in one battle. Same people also attacked kashmir in 1948..however fighting target killing and suicide bombing is quieta different role game

^^^ Agree change the title why the FCuk u wrote terrorist !

Well Upper Dir and Khwaza Khela :O opposite ..

And they should not take those weapons from Upper Dir people Coz they are there standing beside army.

I was there in Barawal Pak Afghan Border in Upper Dir. and I asked the locals about that attack in which 40 of our soldier were martyred. They told me that they went to help army and fought against those bastard from Afghanistan,And when the back up came for army they told the locals to go back.

De weaponize Karachi , Other areas are just fine.

BTW these people aren't terrorists.

So I dont know why you have terrorists in title?

I am not saying they are terrorists but could be misinterpret as they are giving up their guns/machine guns to Pakistan Army, why? Pakistan Army appreciate local people?

If they didn't give up their guns, would they be label as terrorists?
