Within the first 24 seconds of this 5-minute video, you'll already get a laundry list of aircraft that the Pakistan Air Force wants to boast about. “A package comprising of F-16, Mirage and JF-17 will strike the high value target and foreign terrorists,” says the trailer-like voice-over early on in the video, which adds filmy twist to a new song written as a tribute to the Pakistan Special Forces and Pakistan Air Force.
Made by Sahir Ali Bagga, this new song titled “Sherdil Shaheen” is sung by Rahat Fateh Ali Khan and is set to a video featuring action, blood and of course an emotional ending, just like any Bollywood film, or even something produced on that side of the border. The video, produced by the Air Force's Directorate of Media Affairs, was released on September 6, the day Pakistan calls 'Defence Day' for its reaction to an Indian attack in the 1965 war (itself provoked by a Pakistani offensive). Significantly, though, the enemy in the video is not a proxy for India; Instead, they are Taliban stand-ins, a nod to the Pakistani military's current operations against terrorists in the north.
Defence Day has in fact also been an excuse for Pakistan's Army Chief General Raheel Sharif to offer up some bombast. “Armed forces of Pakistan are fully capable of dealing with all types of internal and external threats, may it be conventional or sub-conventional; whether it is cold start or hot start. We are ready,” said Sharif in his speech during the event, referring directly to the Indian doctrine aimed at containing Pakistan's nuclear capabilities. He also termed Kashmir as an “unfinished agenda of partition," a clear signal that the recent failure of talks between the two countries will take some time to mend.
