PAKISTAN accepts joint patroling of afghan boder!

.
This is a strategic decision which correctly serves the long term interests of all parties. We have stressed joint patrols were on the table several weeks ago and I am pleased to see that many in the chains of command acknowledge the need.

.
It is a border. No matter what they need to secure both ways and if needed with help of others like ISAF/NATO/China... Not Russia/India.

Pak UN envoy endorses joint border patrol under Kayani

Staff Report
October 10, 2008

KARACHI: Pakistan’s permanent representative to the United Nations, Abdullah Hussain Haroon, on Thursday suggested the formation of a joint border force of Pakistani and NATO forces, under the command of Pakistan’s army chief to increase co-ordination to curb terrorist activities along the Pak-Afghan border.

“General (Ashfaq) Kiyani should be given the supreme command of this border force. It will help end the misunderstanding and tension between the NATO and Pakistani forces, improve co-ordination between the two forces on action against terrorists and can save lives of many innocent people in the Tribal Areas of our country,” he said. More.

i would be very surprised if the afghans accept Gen.Kiyani as the commander of this task force.

i think a better option would be command of the task force under UN command. it then could include elements of the PA, AA and NATO forces. clear cut RoE's i am sure would be defined.

Pakistan is the one with the most concerns over its sovereignty being violated, Pakistan is the nation whose sovereignty is not recognized by the GoA by virtue of its refusal to accept the Durand Line, therefore I would argue that the Ambassador is absolutely correct in arguing that the Pakistani COAS be the supreme commander of such a force.

The Afghans are already being lead by various nation's under NATO, and have boots on the ground from those nations - a bit hypocritical for them to raise concerns over Pakistani leadership of such a force.

the karazai's acceptence of Gen.Kiyani as the commander of this task force, can be very cool for afghanistan, becase if this idea couldnt work or the prposed targets wouldnt be achived, then it will be all kiyani's HEAD! and then it would be easier to ask him leave the uniform and post & to join the retrd ranks of PAK , GENRLS.:tsk::lol:

Do you guys think General Kaynai getting command is realistic? I hope it is but General Kaynai, as an Army Chief, is not supposted to act like a field commander...

i dont have a problem with this but the afghans certainly will and the attitude of the west has been exactly that - hypocritical. in order to ensure effectiveness of the task force, these pitfalls need to be avoided initially and as the trust builds then the command of the task force can rotate amongst the 2 countries and the Nato forces, just like the coalition naval task force 150 operating in the gulf area.

this is a valid point!
maybe the task force commander would be at the level of corps commander!

.
Yeah that would be more like it, or possibly lower...like a division or a brigade commander. Anyone have any idea on how big this task force is gonna be?

I don't think the COAS literally leading or being incharge is what was implied.

The idea is to have the Pakistani military control the JBF, and whomever you put directly in charge, will report eventually to the Pakistani COAS.

it would be far better for pakistan, to stop thinking about rescueing this sinking ship...?:agree:
