Pakistan accepts Ashraf Ghani as legitimate President of Afghanistan

Maybe concessions were offered behind curtains by Ghani which led to this decision. We simply do not know the details. On the face of it i agree choosing a side so fast is not wise. Let a clearer picture emerge. Abdullah is a snake but in politics one has to deal with such characters as well.

. .
We should accept both and let them fight it out. Never heard of an inauguration of two presidents before, but then is Afghanistan and anything can happen.

Accepting one would have the same effect.
We know that Abdullah Abdullah is even worst for Pakistan compared to Ghani.
Both Indian's puppets. So never mind. The real chiefs are already in the town accepted by the USA.
Correction, not recognised but admitted by the USA. Read in to what you will. :o:

.
Please enlighten me.

First of all, Americans did not take sides in these elections, for all they care right now is for the Deal to stand. Ghani is actually not playing on the American lines right now. Secondly, Ghani was backed by India. Thirdly, before passing judgements, try to read carefully.
Majority of countries' representatives went to Ghani's inauguration.

When the Prime Minister himself intervened and allowed PTM MNAs to travel to Kabul to attend Ashraf Ghani's oath taking ceremony, it was quite evident in the foreign services circle that we are going to accept Ashraf Ghani as the President and deal with him directly.

We can discuss the pros and cons of this decision.

Here's Prime Minister himself announcing it;

Should have accepted both. It's their internal matter.

I dont think that Pakistan should have taken sides. I was better to have left Afghanistan to Afghans. Even if this has come under US influence.

If you're smart, even people who you're against can be used as tools.

This was to send a signal that Pakistan will only negotiate with whom it chooses, and with Abdullah Abdullah's extreme anti-Pakistan stance, ghani was the lesser of two evils.

PTM was just used as a tool to make clear that Pakistan will only recognize Ghani as the legitimate president of Afghanistan.

This also turns PTM into another pawn, and less relevant as an independent movement moving forward.

Well if we have to choose one from the 2 presidents candidates, I would go for Dr Abdullah who is less anti Pakistan than his rival. Over the past few years there is a change of stance in Dr Abdullah’ tone towards Pakistan and Ghani seems to be more anti Pakistan these days than before. Also don’t forget that Ghani’s Vice President is Ammarullah Saleh who is against the idea of Pakistan and always go in India’ s favour.

Should have left them to it! What’s the point in recognising Ghani who just the other day told the Taliban they must sever ties with Pakistan!
Abdullah has been better towards Pakistan of recent years.

Yes, the lesser of the two evils.
Actually, Ashraf Ghani was publicly fairly pro-Pakistan in his early Presidency--a welcome change after that mercurial idiot Karzai who would breathe fire against America and Pakistan one day and then kiss up to them the next day. Ghani's outreach to Pakistan had started to worry India initially. But Ghani was offering peanuts to Pakistan...

Abdullah Abdullah maybe more anti Pakistan but, unlike Ashraf Ghani, he does have significant support in the non-Pashtun groups inside Afghanistan.

Pakistan probably HAD to choose either AA or AG and decided to choose AG. I don't know why--perhaps working with Americans to ensure 'continuity' of the AG govt until the Big Daddy Taliban walks into the 'hood...

Having said that, a deal with AA, Hekmatyar, Dostum, and Taliban, brokered by big powers (and that doesn't include Iran, Turkey or India) and Pakistan is what Pakistan is probably looking to achieve.

Perhaps.

It's a wait and see moment now. It's clear that the US will withdraw, regardless of it the taliban sticking to the peace deal or not. It's now a matter of if Ghani is willing to negotiate here, and it's looking like he's softening his position.

We'll see.

I don't see any problem here. Excellent strategy to counter Hindustan in Afg. Pakistan has given its blessing to the marginally dominant player in Kabul. The ball is now in Ghani's court. If he continues to antagonise Pakistan despite this tacit approval from Islamabad, he will be committing political suicide, since Pakistan is the last external power standing once NATO leaves Afg. It is that simple. Ghani will be forced into a coalition government of sorts with the Taliban. With Pakistan's backing, Ghani can remove his personal competitors such as double Abdullah. The Indians will lose influence in Kabul as a consequence of this sequence of events.

Ghani will have to accept this new reality or run off with his tail between his legs. Either way, Pakistan gains.

It is not always necessary to eliminate a threat, when that threat can be turned into an opportunity.
