Pakistan accepts Ashraf Ghani as legitimate President of Afghanistan

We should remian neutral and congrats both sides

Pretty sure Pakistan would have done that if, unlike other external powers, Pakistan had the choice. But there is no other external player more important in Afghanistan's affairs than Pakistan and so Pakistan had to make a move. Unlike other countries, who are pretty quiet about the two Presidents electing themselves in Afghanistan at the same time (wow!), Pakistan had to make a pawn-move...and Pakistan did. And I bet the move was done with the American input.

Now... as it is the classic in Afghanistan--there are deals behind deals, backstabbing behind hugging, hugging behind backstabbing... so who really knows how Pakistan and Mr. Abdullah are going to work together; there are elements in Pakistan who think that Abdullah is far more legit than Ghani.

There is a lot of smoke screen. But we shall know soon. The current situation in Afghanistan can't last long. This is like going back to the late 1970s before the Soviets were 'invited' to Afghanistan.

Intersting to see what move abdullah abdullah will make ..will he end up doing a coup?

Should have left them to it! What’s the point in recognising Ghani who just the other day told the Taliban they must sever ties with Pakistan!
Abdullah has been better towards Pakistan of recent years.
Ghani feeding PTM.

may be a civil war in making, US is just running away for her own good, damn care about what happens in the backdrop, yes they knew since few years everything is out of their hands now.

govt must take a clear point of view about PTM.

It used to be divide and conquer but it now seems to be divide and run.

I think Pakistan should have waited few more days to declare and support Ghani as president to see if there is any compromise between Ghani and Abdullah. Most likely US will support Ashraf Ghani and don’t forget that both Zalmey Khalilzad and Ashraf Ghani are childhood friends and studied together in US as well. I expect Ghani will be more harsh towards Pakistan in his 2nd term with his number 2.

seems correct, may be there is peace that way, otherwise we may see bloodshed again.

Sometimes I think Afghanistan should be divided into different autonomous/sovereign regions, if not countries, based on ethnic lines. I mean after 18 years of American money, patronage, protection these people still elect TWO Presidents at the same time then that's a very bad sign. So divide into countries, with the Pashtun regions completely blocking off the more anti-Pakistan groups to access Pakistani border. The Talibans would ensure that no repeat of the 2001+ terrorism into Pakistan is allowed and in return good investment from Pakistan and China into the Taliban controlled 'Islamic Emirate of Afghanistan'.

Taliban will never relinquish non pushtun areas.

Goes to show that imran khan is actually a moron. He has uttered BS in every country and now this. US is dealing with taliban and ignoring ghani, signalling as to who really holds power and this idiot goes on to accept ghani as legitimate leader. I cannot be more disgusted by our dumb PM.
Just few days ago he blamed Pakistan again and said we will release taliban prisoner once they rupture relations with Pakistan. He keeps supporting PTM and keeps abusing Pakistan and keeps lkcking modi feet and yet this idiot accepts this puppet???

We will never allow that, and frankly I don’t think it’s possible. The other ethnic groups have problems among themselves, the Tajik leaders don’t agree among themselves, the hazaras are divided into three different factions, the Uzbek Dostum raped his Uzbek political rival, and the Pashtuns are also divided. Our situation is only magnified because of the damn war, otherwise all nations have internal problems, should they all be divided as well. But beyond Afghanistan will never be divided so long as we hold tight to Islam, the day Afghanistan will be divided is the day we no longer have Islam. If the Taliban tomorrow became a Pashtun nationalist movement like Turkey, then we will have a Kurd problem with the Tajiks. The Tajiks are trying to vamp up Tajik nationalism, but as history has proven, nationalism falls short before ideology, which is why Nasser’s pan Arabism failed against Faisal’s pan-islam. The other ethnic groups can try their nationalism separatism but they will fail for two reasons, one because of Islam and two we are the same people (Iranic). They can have their own states the day we abandon Islam (May Allah forbid), but so long as we hold onto Islam, we will crush every one of their attempts.

Ghani is proceeding with the prisoner release, contrary to his previous belligerent statements. This is a direct result of US and Pakistani pressure. A deal has been struck to allow Ghani to consolidate his personal position in Kabul in return for facilitating the peace deal. It is clear that Pakistan has a plan here and will see it through. I am confident that this will benefit the Afghan people and us.

Yes, there was a reason Pakistan accepted Ashraf Ghani as the President. Good that you have shed some light on the very practical reasoning. Thank you.

Both Ghani and Pakistan have concluded that they need to work with each other - albeit cautiously - in the new Afghanistan. I think we will know for sure if this analysis is true if the anti-Pak rhetoric coming from Kabul dies down in the coming weeks and months.

We can discuss the pros and cons of this decision.
Facts:

1. The Afghan government (not the shadow Taliban government) is recognized by the UN and all world powers.
2. Afghan institutions, as authorized & empowered by the Afghan constitution and supported by the aforementioned 'internationally recognized Afghan government', conducted elections and announced a winner - Ghani.

Given the above, Pakistan has no choice but to recognize Ghani as President of Afghanistan. The alternate would be something along the lines of various countries refusing to accept the PTI government and Imran Khan as Prime Minister because the PMLN/PPP opposition keep crying and whining about 'rigging'.
