First of all, Americans did not take sides in these elections, for all they care right now is for the Deal to stand. Ghani is actually not playing on the American lines right now. Secondly, Ghani was backed by India. Thirdly, before passing judgements, try to read carefully.

If you're smart, even people who you're against can be used as tools.

This was to send a signal that Pakistan will only negotiate with whom it chooses, and with Abdullah Abdullah's extreme anti-Pakistan stance, ghani was the lesser of two evils.

PTM was just used as a tool to make clear that Pakistan will only recognize Ghani as the legitimate president of Afghanistan.

This also turns PTM into another pawn, and less relevant as an independent movement moving forward.
