Pak proposes Schengen-like visa system for South Asia

On the eve of the meeting between prime ministers Manmohan Singh and Yousuf Raza Gilani, Islamabad proposed a Schengen-like visa system for South Asia.

At the SAARC ministerial meeting today, Pakistan Foreign Minister Hina Rabbani Khar was said to have proposed an open visa system for the SAARC region, saying she had the backing of her entire establishment. Bangladesh was learnt to have backed the Pakistani proposal.

India and Pakistan discussed the issue of terrorism, with New Delhi underlining that justice for the victims of the 26/11 Mumbai terror attacks was not a “lost cause”. Pakistan brought up the the issue of sending a judicial commission to India in connection with the attacks. Khar was learnt to have told External Affairs Minister S M Krishna that Pakistan had lost almost 30,000 lives due to terrorism and it was in everyone’s interest to have a “safe and secure” region.

Seeking to build on “positive indications” from Islamabad’s decision on granting MFN status to India and reducing the trust deficit, Krishna discussed with Khar the entire gamut of bilateral issues including terrorism.

“Terrorism continues to be the focal point of India’s dialogue process with Pakistan. So when we discuss bilateral issues, we certainly factor terror and its various ramifications,” Krishna said after the meeting.

The bonhomie between the two sides was evident from the fact that Krishna and Khar had three meetings in the day — one was over coffee during a break at the SAARC ministerial meeting and another over lunch with their Afghanistan counterpart.

They couldn't have come up with a more stupid idea than this. Seriously, if this is implemented (God forbid) then there will be hordes of migrants pouring across our border, and that is the last thing Pakistan needs. We can't burden our limited resources, considering that we ourselves with our current population are facing power shortages, PPP scum need to be kicked out of power ASAP and a government for the people needs to be put in its place.

Also sad to note,the BJP ain't faring any better.Look at what their latest press release is;pondering on the "man of peace" comment?Ridiculous to state the least.They would have earned some brownie points in my books if they had brought up the EU vote at the least.It's unfortunate to observe that the BJP is turning into a desi version of the Republican party.Too unsophisticated and stupid for anyone to relate to.

May be Schengen type visa which is valid for Afghanistan, China, CIS, Maldives, Russia, India but each border port is free to enforce their own immigration rules. And having a visa is not a gurantee of an entry into the country. A person may be refused from port of entry despite holding a valid visa

Oh so whats the purpose of that "Schengen" visa ? Nothing. Its nothing but getting individual country visa.

Hina went out of her mind, we already suffered from Afghan free movement across border and with lot of difficulties we are now able to control flow of their entrance and now India! No thanks. Our region didn't deserve such brilliant ideas.

The Problem is Pakistan has total Idiots in Power. Before you have Schengen type visa arrangement you have to have a EURO ZONE type set up. I think he wanted to say SAARC should have an EU type arrangement where citizens of SAARC countries could move around without the need of a VISA.

Precisely my point.But if that's what we really want,I will rather advocate a borderless India-Pakistan where India's internal security becomes Pakistan's internal security.Let's share the headache together!!!

Masha Allah,India-Pakistan would have been a friggin sight to see... to the United States and even to Saudi Arabia...I kid you not....Jinnah should have given the reigns over to a capable leader.That's my sole complaint!!!

Google yourself. That was not Jinnah's hope, neither did he ever proposed an INDO-PAK Federation with Common Currency, Common Defence and Common Foreign Affairs.

First of all this proposal is from Pakistani side and therefore a non starter. Simply put, Hina has lost her mind.
