LAHORE: Over 1,200 items on the negative list regime for trade with India will be withdrawn in December and the time has come for the two countries to think of introducing a common currency to boost trade, ruling Pakistan People's Party leader Jehangir Badr has said.

"Precisely 1,209 items on the negative list of trade with India will be withdrawn by December," Badr said while addressing a Pakistan-India Media Conference at the Lahore Press Club yesterday.

The time has come for Pakistan and India to think of introducing a common currency for countering the pressure of the US dollar, British pound and Euro and to boost bilateral trade, he said.

Around 40 Indian journalists, who are in Pakistan for a three-day visit, attended the conference jointly arranged by the Lahore Press Club, Chandigarh Press Club and the Press Club of India in New Delhi.

Badr, who is part of a parliamentary-level peace dialogue between the two countries, mentioned how the PPP and its governments had been trying to improve relations with India.

Information Minister Qamar Zaman Kaira, who also addressed the gathering, said peace between India and Pakistan is very important and both countries were actively engaged at different levels in this regard.

How would you be feeding your neighbors with an increase in trade and the introduction of a common currency???

On practical terms how is this possible when the currencies of these nations have vastly different values?? And this sort of economic union requires incredibly close ties both politically but also socially but wih the current state of affairs this is an insane proposal. If India and Paksitan can't even agree on a border and Paksitan is accuses of sending terrorists to kill Indians then how can this even be considered?? Utter nonsense.

+ how would Paksitan feel at being dominated by India in this relationship?

Moreover, there is the issue of spillover of terrorism from Pakistan to India that could be catastrophic for the Indian economy.

Pakistani central bank has habit of printing too much currencies causing constant devaluation of Pakistan Rupees, so not a good idea. Further they have severe debt crisis, we don't want a burden on our economy just like Greece has become for EU countries.

First act on 26/11 criminals...and then talk about these stuff..

A common trade currency results in a symbiotic relationship which benefits all the participating nations. Those member nations which refuse to ensure domestic economic rehabilitation will end up in similar situations like Greece during a global economic crises. So, it does benefit the people of all participating nations as their governments will be in dire straits if they continue with widespread corruption etc. This offcourse also applies to India in the event that there is a SAARC common currency.

The issues of terrorism and crime are issues which will continue unabated unless South Asia doesn't get its house in order. Trade and economic rehabilitation in the region is the only way forward

Good proposal from Pakistani side

They want to take the place of PIGS economy of South Asia while they want India to become Germany for them.

Thanks.....but No Thanks :D
