ISLAMABAD - After the beheading of 13 Pakistani soldiers by the Taliban in Miranshah, Pakistan Army has decided to initiate a targeted offensive in North Waziristan.
US has repeatedly demanded that Pakistan launch an offensive in North Waziristan especially against the so-called Haqqani network. Pakistan has promised to address the concern on Haqqani network but was reluctant to launch a full fledged operation in restive North Waziristan.
However, after this latest incident against Pakistani soldiers, sources told Online, Pakistan Army has decided to launch a targeted operation in North Waziristan in next few days, which would be completely different from the operation launched in Swat.
Sources said that Army Chief Gen Ashfaq Pervez Kayani in this regard has consulted Pakistan Supreme Commander Asif Ali Zardari in this regard and taken him into confidence.
Sources confirmed that currently three brigades of Pakistan Army are in North Waziristan who are fighting against militancy. However, the sources, were reluctant to give the final date of the operation but said it could be any time in next few days and likely before the NATO heads summit meeting in Chicago, which is to be attended by Asif Ali Zardari.
After the military offensive in South Waziristan nearly 3000 militants went into hiding in NW.
According to sources, as the weather is becoming warmer the militants are coming down from mountains and are attacking the army soldiers.

PAKISTAN SECURITY BRIEF: Pak Army to Launch Offensive in North Waziristan

About time man, about time....(If its true)

Very difficult to find militant. They disappears in small groups, caves and then attacks.
Evacuate the children and we should nuke waziristan from Raad cruise missile with smaller yield. It should be effective weapon on hills.
To bring Peace, Taliban death is vital.

Three brigades of the Pakistan Army who are fighting against militancy in North Waziristan is woefully short of the minimum requirement for counter insurgency ops. The ratio should be at least 17:1 meaning that for every 1000 insurgents, there would be a requirement of at least 17,000 or almost six brigades or two divisions for offensive ops.

That means another three additional brigades would need to be moved to Waziristan. But the question is, how many militants are actually present there? If more than 1000 then the number of troops required would progressively jump creating considerable strain on logistics . And to keep these lines of communications secure from the insurgents, more troops would be required!

It's tough going for sure. Even if the TTP are routed, they would slip into Afghanistan to fight another day, ie once the PA withdraws after completion of ops. Now how long that would take is anyone's guess.

I know that's very difficult to invade this mountainous region, but IF it's a part of pakistan, pak army SHOULD control it !
This region is partly in the hand of militants and bandits/dacoits

Why pakistan did not invade north waziristan in 2009? Can someone explain me?
If pakistan is fighting all the talibans, it should also fight the haqqani network and the extremists groups
