Europe is no more a sustainable export partner for pakistan....
trade can cease at any time for any lame reason.....
Pakistan should concenferate on other regions.

.
you have one of the largest markets in the world next to you why not export to them?

.
To make our agriculture competitive we need cheaper electricity, good pesticides and fertilizers, finally better guidance to farmer.

.
and above all...no private multinationals should be allowed to sell seeds in pakistan.
they force farmers to buy their modified seeds from then every season....and prices are alwahs high..
they done it in india and many farmers now cant afford to buy seeds and so cant grow anything.

There are farmers in india who are forced to buy seeds every season by multinationals under copyright and intellectual property laws...laws that shouldny apply to food.

I also remember seeing a documentary according to which American farmers are also harassed by Monsanto officials who check every season whether they are using new seeds or recycling the old ones. Under the intellectual property laws farmers are allowed to use seeds for one season only. For every new batch of seeds a new DNA marker (fingerprint) is inserted into plant genome.

According to that documentary not only the 'GM seed using farmers' are affected but the farmers whose fields are next to their fields are also harassed as there may be a small amount of GM seeds that could be propagated to next fields unintentionally. These Monsanto officials can sample any field they want and bring a lawsuit or heavy fine on these unsuspecting farmers.

As for India, in addition to the debt caused by GM seeds and poor advice to farmers; it could be as simple as population pressure in the rural areas with increasing commodity prices and decreasing cultivable land per person.

One word, Non-Tarrif Barriers and risk of settlement due to uncertain political relations.

Well it depends, Generally there are two types of exports
1- High Value Add, High elasticity exports i.e. Cars, High Tech Machines etc These exports are big ticket items and result in greater export flows, but susceptible to changes in demand since people tend to delay this spending first in bad times.
2- Low/Medium value, low elasticity exports i.e. Food, Clothing etc These exports are small ticket items and result in lesser export flows, but not susceptible to changes in demand as the above in bad times since a household may delay the decision to buy a car but cant do so with food.

In Pakistan, usually farmers saves some healthy seed from their previous crop for next season. Secondly, in terms of IPR, its Pakistan not UK
