I know I might sound like a newbie, but what are the advantage sof using CFTs over 600Gal Tanks?
Wont using the External Tanks be much better?

Just need a brief overview. Expecting Replies from TOPGUN, Santro, Windjammer and Fathamn17.

You free up two hard-points for weapons/other pods carriage and ease wing load. The aircraft can take off with more weapons and less fuel, and refuel later in the air: useful for carrier and high altitude ops. External tanks contribute more to the RCS.

However, CFTs cannot be jettisoned, and however much they deny, degrade aerodynamic performance - even Mig-29s with their spine tank were more sluggish than their earlier counterparts.

More informed members can add to or correct this.

I assume the cage protection is even applied during the Idle engine thrust, since albeit the chokes are in place but the arrester hook doesn't look to be extended.
Chocks and holding the brake pedals are usually sufficient OUTSIDE of afterburner ground engine runs. But if some maintenance operations require afterburner runs, then the aircraft must be towed to a specific area on the flightline far from people and buildings and the arresting hook engaged.

SABER, FOD is Foreign Object Damage, but Windjammer's example is not the usual case how it happens!

That was an example in case, I doubt such a cage would be able to stop any loose nuts and bolts being sucked into the engine.

Please advise as to when the throttle is at full bore,( Video Link), is it just the arrester hook and brake pedals that stop the aircraft hurtling forward or some other application has to be engaged. Thanks.

In afterburner, only the hook keep the aircraft from 'jumping' the chocks.

Seriously...There are no 'clamps' on the gear, only brakes. On a non-afterburn engine run, if the chocks are not tightly secured and brakes are not applied, the aircraft can 'jump' chocks. Never seen one such event myself, but I knew of a couple of crew chiefs who lost their permissions to do engine runs.

To expand on what Gambit said, the thrust of modern fighter aircraft is freakish. With the F-15, if you ever get to see one in operation, keep an eye on the nozzles. On the ground, they are designed to open fully, which keeps idle thrust as low as possible; otherwise, the jet, even at idle, really wants to scoot along way too fast. During takeoff, as the engine spools up to military (non-AB) power, the nozzles close down to maximize thrust. When/if AB is selected, the nozzles then open back up, which is necessary to prevent compressor stalling.

The brakes can hold the jet probably to mil power, although normal takeoffs are

- Engines 80%; check function
- release brakes
- throttle up to mil power

AB is not normally used for TO. It's not needed, wastes fuel, and is very loud. But when it IS used, it's a lot of fun. You have to hurry quickly to retract the gear before exceeding the 250 knot gear door limit.

Any attempt to hold the jet in AB with just brakes, and what would happen is that the tires would revolve on and around the wheel rims if traction is good, or it'd simply scrape forward. There's no holding it with brakes or chocks.

With just idle power, the jet will accelerate to over 100 knots if you let it go. I've tried it! ;)

I guess I didn't make myself clear, what my query is, before the take-off run, is it just a matter of brake release or some other application has to be applied for the aircraft to surge forward, like say you have to engage the gear for a vehicle to move.

Nope...There is nothing like a handle 'putting the aircraft into gear'. As soon as there is sufficient thrust to overcome the aircraft's weight, it will move. Brakes and chocks are the only things keeping the aircraft in place. By the time the crew chief signals his assistant for the chocks to be removed, the front chocks are not easily removed from under the main landing gear wheels. The rear chocks are often used to hit the front ones from under the wheels. The pilot then release the brakes and the aircraft move.

If you look at the world..
and the average skills of pilots..
Both PAF and IAF pilots qualify among the best in the world..
it has to do with experience..
it has to do with training.
The PAF has its training regime from two of the best.. the RAF and the USAF..
the IAF has spent a lot of time training its pilots on doctrines derived from exchange programs.

Not that I am against any arab forces..
but the people who taught the first F-16 classes to air forces.. among which were the PAF,the IDF-AF.. and arab nations..
guess who the "bright" guys were.. and who formed the study groups together.. it was the PAF and IDF-AF pilots.

In any case.. its an established fact.
lets not bring it up again and again otherwise we would start looking like another forum run by a certain nationality :cheesy:

The test of all these claims comes in wartime... and the records arent that bad..

as for the CFT thing.. glad it settles some.. fanboys from the other side making cynical comments about the PAF not getting CFT's..
