PAF T-37 Trainer Jet Crashes near Swabi
January 22, 2008

ISLAMABAD: A pilot was killed when his aircraft crashed in Pakistan's North-West Frontier Province, the air force said. The T-37 trainer jet caught fire before hitting the ground on the premises of the Ghulam Ishaq Khan Institute of Engineering Sciences and Technology, located in the small village of Topi, some 100 kilometres from capital Islamabad.

"The pilot died in the crash," said a spokesman for Pakistan Air Force (PAF), Wing Commander Tariq Mehmood. A mechanical malfunction appears to have caused the accident, he added.

The pilot is dead and a gardener on the ground is also feared to have expired in the crash, the sources said.

This was the first jet lost by the PAF this year. In 2007, six military jets crashed - five due to mechanical failures and one after hitting a bird.

The T-37 is a training plane used by about 20 air forces around the world. Pakistan has acquired about 60 of the jets over a number of years, but due to attrition no more than 20 remain in service today.

Crash of T-37,
Its a sorry incident.
Allah bless the departed soul.

However.......
the incident has raised many question...
1. Its a two seat version. what about the other pilot (instructor or student). Did he also die or ejected safely.

2. The report has mentioned only one pilot who has died, this implies that it was flown by single pilot. This means that the pilot must be a flight cadet, on his solo mission doing some navigation, cross country mission.

3. The very fact that aircarft crashed inside TOPI institute implies that pilot may be reckless, trying to impress students there,by nap of earth flying, dare devil manoeuvres, close to the ground. Must be impressing some female students.

4. Above are just speculations, however, i based these on some facts that, i know some pilots, when they were undergoing primery flying training on Mushaks, in CFT (College of Flying Training), Risalpur, who used to bet in mess, to fly at level with, Ghazi Borothra Canal, which , at that time was under construction, and fully dry.

5. Some PAF specialist, may comment, as far as i know, T-37 are flown at some considerable haight for training. Any emergency give sufficient time for pilot to eject. It may be possible that solo trainee pilot was, hands on with T-37, yet he may not be given proper tarining for emergency egress, how to handle contigency.

6. This bring, in focus, flying training, imarted in PAF Academy. How safety is emphasized in training. I think its the basic step to learn, how to get out of aircarft, which must be taught.

7. Finally, T-37 is now more then 30 years old in PAF service. PAF should do away with this junk. What about K-8 jet trainer. why K-8 is not fully inducted and replaced T-37.

8. Stop talking about induction, commencement of manufacturing of JF-17. talk Karakorums (K-8). PAF should induct thase more .

9. This nation, paying taxes, need answers!!!!

I am a student of final year GIK Institute. We are the eye-witness of this tragic incident. The jet was, firt of all, on fire before it crashed so no question of impressing female students of GIKI.

Secondly, the plane was crashing on roof of Faculty of Mechanical engineering, at Pilot Officer Jahenzaib was trying to save students there, what do you say for this???? Impressing girls or what????

Damn you!!!!

first off Blackwater its not 'TOPI institute'.. its G.I.K. Institute.. secondly i agree with salmanm.. ive seen the last few moments of the plane, it was headed straight towards our auditorium and faculty buildings.. the pilot could have ejected letting the plane crash into the audi/fac buildings hence taking the lives of countless people.. however, he bravely decided to sacrifice his life just to save the others.. therefore.. we will highly appreciate if dimwits such as you keep you stupid opinions to yourself..

Peace!

i dont know what kind of person r u BLACWATER!!!?a young man has laid his life saving so many lives and u r still saying all this bullshit. people like u can endanger their lives while impressing girl.while what jehanzab did was a great act of bravery and we should all be proud of him.there are so many eye witnesses who saw all this and u r blaiming the innocent pilot.shame on u and u dont deserve to be a moderator of this blog or whatever...
i highly condemn views posted by BLACKWATER!!!

Hey.

I am GIKIAN student of 3rd year.I am eye-witness of Jet Crash here at GIKI.Theres nothing wrong happened with crash as far as ur comments are concerned like impressing girls etc.How can us ay that all??

A person who is going to martyr himself and giving his life for students and GIKI faculty you are saying he was impressing girls??

For ur kind information Jet started fire while that was in air and that brave pilot's plane crashed at so safe place where there was nobody on campus. He could have ejected as his instructor said but he didnt even eject himself just to save us,our faculty and countless lives.

That piolet saved humanity, saved our Faculty building and so forth and thats a really bad n rude comment about him:Impressing the girls.

And One more thing.I think thats ur habbit to impress girls as u r saying abt Pilot,Rite??Well Really A shame on u.So bad.

and Yeas?Ur comment about that:

"Above are just speculations, however, i based these on some facts that, i know some pilots, when they were undergoing primery flying training on Mushaks, in CFT (College of Flying Training), Risalpur, who used to bet in mess, to fly at level with, Ghazi Borothra Canal, which , at that time was under construction, and fully dry"

R u mad blackwater? If that would have bben a bet or chalenge then he would have flown Mr or ejected not like to save us completely as he did.

Neway:May His soul rest in Peace(Ameen)

A lot of these jets are downed by bird strikes. We need to develop a system to which birds wont be a threat. But it is easier said then done.

Problem is the money. Lots of PAF money is in the JF-17.

People who talk about taxes, should really check if those taxes are enough compare to the other countries. Plus, really how many people do pay taxes! :disagree:

And then there are suicide bombers and politicians which really help the economy! :frown:

True! But we cant afford to loose valuable lives. Just see what have we lost here? A brave future pilot, the amount of money spent on his training, the aircraft. So in simpler words we cannot even afford this to continue for a long time.

Agreed. Nothing better could have been said. People dont pay tax at all but however i would like to add that in all the other countries for e.g the highest amount of tax which is cut from your monthly income i think about 80% is paid in germany, but inexchange the services that the government offers to her citizen are unimagineable. Similarly the case with countires like canada, USA but that is not the case in pakistan.

And then there are suicide bombers and politicians which really help the economy! :frown:

Agreed again, politicans are the main reason, we are still there. Hope Musharraf continues as atleast he has a vision for pakistan what none of the others have.

Dear Forum Members,

Sad news that the pilot did not survive - I understand he flew the aircraft to avoid loss of life on the ground and thereby did not eject.
Sincere condolences and respect for the family

Please can anyone confirm the pilot as

Pilot Officer Jahenzaib

May I also request that if any information about the loss appears in the Pakistan media please could someone contact me with the details, especially his full name. I would like to ensure I correctly honour him on my web site.

With greates respect
