Pranab says ‘all options open if Pakistan does not act’

Updated at: 1708 PST, Saturday, January 10, 2009
NEW DELHI: Indian external affairs minister, Pranab Mukherjee Saturday said India is keeping all options open if Pakistan does not act against perpetrators of the Mumbai terror attacks but it will not resort to Israel-type military strikes

In an interview on a TV channel, Mukherjee stressed that India was keeping options open if Pakistan did not act upon the evidence linking Pakistani nationals to the Mumbai carnage.

“All options are open. We have not reached the end of the road,” he said.

“Pakistan, what they have asked for, we have given them. We expect them to act on it. If they don’t act on it, what follow up steps we take at what space of time will take place, future course will decide,” he said.

Mukherjee, however, ruled out Israel-type military strikes against Pakistan.

“I don’t agree to that because this is totally wrong and the situation is not at all comparable. I have not gone and occupied any of Pakistan’s land which Israel has done. So how can the situation be compared.”

Mukherjee described the sacking of Pakistan’s National Security Adviser Mahmud Ali Durrani as “an unfortunate situation”.

“This is really an unfortunate situation. But we have no option. We shall have to deal with only the government of the day,” Mukherjee said, according to excerpts released by the news channel.

“Whether the government of the day holds real power or not, it is not for me to judge. It is for the people of Pakistan to judge. It is for the authorities in Pakistan to judge,” he said.

Pak-India standoff at a new crossroad after 43 yrs of Tashqand Pact

Updated at: 1311 PST, Saturday, January 10, 2009
LAHORE: Tashqand Pact, which Pakistan and India had entered after the 1965 war, has this day completed 43 years. The two countries having fought three wars on Kashmir issue after Mumbai attacks now passing through a new face-off era. Pak-India 1965 war had formally started on September 6, when India had crossed the then international border of West Pakistan. United Nations Security Council on September 22 had approved the unanimous cease-fire resolution, which brought the war to an end. Pakistan and India had signed the historical pact on January 10, 1966 at Tashqand city of the then Soviet Union, currently of Uzbekistan. The agreement envisaged that the forces of both the countries would be withdrawn to their positions of April 5, 1965 and abide by the cease-fire clauses on ceasefire line. The agreement was inked by the then Pakistan President, Ayub Khan and the Indian prime Minister, Lal Bahadur Shashtri. These two countries of the sub-continent at wars in 1948, 1965 and 1999 in Kashmir and in 1971 in East Pakistan are now the nuclear powers and passing though a new phase of strife and tension, following Mumbai atrtacks.

India virtually ruled out any Israel type action against Pakistan in the wake of the Mumbai terror attacks, saying the situation is not comparable.

External Affairs Minister Pranab Mukherjee [Images], however, maintained that "future course" will decide how India will deal with Pakistan if the latter does not comply with its demands about ending terrorism.

"I do not agree to that. Because this is totally wrong. The situation is not at all comparable," he said when asked whether Israeli type offensive against Hamas in Gaza Strip could be an option for the Government against Pakistan.

"I have not gone and occupied any (of) Pakistan's land which Israel has done (in Palestine). So, how the situation
can be comparable?" Mukherjee asked during an interview to CNN-IBN.

Maintaining that all options are still "open", he said India expects Pakistan to act on the evidence linking elements in the neighbouring country to Mumbai attacks.

"When I say all options are open, all options are open. There is no need of picking up option a, option b, option c, option d. No need of that. I am not responding to that. What I am responding to is options are open," he said.

"We have not reached the end of the road. Pakistan, what they have asked for, we have given them. We expect them to act on it," Mukherjee said.

"If they do not act on it, then what follow up steps we will take and in what space of time it will take place, future course will decide," he said.

The nerves, they really think they can pull off an Isreal-Gaza on us.
How can they even mention something like that?
I think the moron Mukherjee should keep all his "options" open and see what happens once he uses the wrong ones.
This is the proof once again that India is anything BUT a nation that desires peace in the region.
These constant threats and imperialistic talk from Indian officials is useless and tends to stir up the war hysteria which India has created by itself.
How can Mr. Mukherjee even THINK of "occupying" Pakistani land or even mention it?
These idiots seriously need to be taught a good lesson, I fear that Indias expansionist attitude will increase even more and more unless Pakistan takes action not in favor of India, but against it.
Things need to be made clear, we are not Indias pets, who do they think they are?!
Pakistan will act once she sees the opportunity, it is not up to the Indians to decide this or to force us into doing something.
A very wrong approach from India, as seen during the Mumbai attacks.
This tough talk will not help one bit, and more Pakistanis are getting the feeling that they should simply move their back towards these warmongering idiots and not give them what they want.
Our sympathy for India and the Mumbai attacks continues to fade away due to these idiotic statements from e.g. Mukherjee.

he didnt say the situation is same he rather said : India virtually ruled out any Israel type action against Pakistan in the wake of the Mumbai terror attacks, saying the situation is not comparable.

"I have not gone and occupied any (of) Pakistan's land which Israel has done (in Palestine). So, how the situation
can be comparable?"

Still mentioning it or even answering it resembles some sort of superiority feeling.
The question is completely out of context and makes no sense at all.
The fact that India is RULING out any type of Israel action against Pakistan means they perhaps THINK they can manage it but don't want to.
The situation is indeed not comparable, infact, the situation is not good for any military option India has in mind

.
Gaza is a full fledged invasion and occupation by Israel - India can claim not to do anything comparable to Gaza and attempt some sort of surgical strike.

'All options on the table' means the option of 'military action' is on the table as well.

India is warmongering as it has been from day one.

.
Musharraf today was saying that Pakistan has the capability and while India is talking about surgical strikes, we might deliver it if pushed too far or the threat seemed inevitable.

.
Yep, i've also seen 2 f7 over Lahore on day before yesterday but they were flying at high altitude!

Musharraf is a leader that would back up his words of retaliation once we would be hit by any Indian strike.
I'm not sure how much the PPP led government will live up to this.

In times like these, we NEED a solid government, another coup will not do us any good, we really need to show the world that the GoP is capable of handing the situation and can take adequate measurements without letting the Army take over like a bigger brother.

It would be suicidal for them if they choose otherwise and more over once hit, they would not be able to bear both the public and pakistan armed forces pressure over not acting.
PAF chief was quoted saying that the government has given them the approval to fully hit back if India decides to carry on with the misadventure.
