its a military to military involvement. plus the emphasis is laid on pilot skills under adverse conditions as the threat level is ramped up each day. good experience i would say.

"The US has apparently asked Pakistan whether it will be willing to participate in the Red Flag exercise in 2009. Pakistan's response is not yet known," said a senior official.

The US invite to PAF, incidentally, comes soon after the return of the Indian Sukhoi-30MKI fighters, IL-78 mid-air refuellers and IL-76 heavy-lift aircraft from the Red Flag exercise held at the Nellis US Air Force base at Nevada in August. While the Red Flag invite is being seen as "a balancing act", the Indian security establishment is more "concerned" about the continuing US military aid to Pakistan on the pretext of helping it fight terrorism.

"Do the Taliban or Al Qaida have an air force? Since 9/11, the US has given Pakistan $6 billion in military aid in the name of counter-terrorism but the reality is that most of the weaponry is primarily meant for conventional wars. Obviously, we are concerned," said an official. Even US lawmakers have raised questions about the Bush administration's plans to supply 18 spanking new F-16s armed with deadly missiles to Pakistan as well as upgrade over 30 F-16s already present in the PAF's combat fleet.

The Bush administration holds the upgraded F-16s will support Pakistani Army's operations against militants along the volatile Pak-Afghan border and the Federally Administered Tribal Areas. Once upgraded with advanced targeting pods, radar systems, precision-guided munitions and missiles, the Pakistani F-16s will be able to undertake night precision-bombing missions and close-air support operations. Interestingly, this comes at a time when some amount of brinkmanship is taking place between US and Pakistani forces along the Pak-Afghan border, with President George Bush even authorising cross-border ground assault operations without prior approval by Islamabad.

Along with the upgrade packages for Pakistani F-16s, Cobra helicopters and other platforms, the US will also train PAF in close-air support, aerial refuelling and night-flying operations, with the Red Flag exercise dovetailing into these plans. All this is bound to raise concern in India, especially since Pakistani F-16s are also jury-rigged to deliver nuclear weapons. Moreover, Pakistan is now also gearing up to induct the first lot of the planned 250 JF-17 'Thunder' fighters from China.

IAF, of course, has its own modernisation plans, even though it continues to grapple with a depletion in the number of its fighter squadrons, down to 32 from the "sanctioned strength" of 39.5. For one, the 230 Sukhoi-30MKIs contracted from Russia, in deals worth around $8.5 billion, are now being inducted at a faster pace than earlier, with plans afoot to complete the process by 2014.

For another, IAF is going in for mid-life upgrades of its 63 MiG-29s and 51 Mirage-2000s, with new weapon and avionics packages, after completing the process for 125 MiG-21 'Bisons' and around 100 MiG-27s and Jaguars.
Then, of course, there is the gigantic Rs 42,000 crore project currently underway to acquire 126 multi-role combat aircraft, with the first of these fighters projected for a touch down in India by 2013.

The most stupid question of the year - especially when repeated ad nauseum by the US media to criticize Pakistan's weapons acquisitions, given the extent to which air power has been used by the US in both Iraq and Afghanistan.

USA has little to fear from PAK as a military power and even the most ardent Pakistani Patriot would accept that and another fact is that the US does not do anything as a favor - there is always an agenda or motive.

IAF was invited to Red flag and USAF has a very close look at Sukhoi's and thereby gaging the Russian air force.

The JF-17 is built with Chinese expertise too and given the number of military personnel here , they would know that how much can be known about a nations air force by having a close look at their air fleet.

I think they are acertaining about current fleet as well as the fleet that will going to be join in a years to come and hence you have seen description of MRCA. Regarding, LCA I think its fate depends upon its correction of engine errors otherwise it will definetly going to join by 2010.
