PAF and The Case for Eurofighter Typhoon

They’re expensive but I think it would be a solution to anything India or many other nations can throw at Pakistan for a few years. Might find a way to cut a deal
I agree with you ,any thing is possible with the current world disorder. Nobody imagined crude oil to go below the 20s. With the current economic mayhem specially in the western world,we should not rule out a lucrative deal regarding the Typhoon. At desperate times unthinkable things do happen!!!!

Pakistan has started building and exporting Jets. The capability achieved after long road of hardships is not worth buying anything new rather expanding and collaborating. We have reached a stage where the aviation world should see us as a partner rather than a customer.

What upgrade PAF will do now?? Will BVR capability for self protection will be added?
Bhai no bvr as one of the rexpectable member mention that we are going to increase our capability in air to ground and air to see and some avionics and modern cockpit. just visit mirages capability thread

Hi Araz,

Apologies for the delayed response.

This Mirage upgrade was initially negotiated with CATIC which didn't go through due to gaps in capability maturity of a few systems.

A South African is being appointed to carry out this upgrade to a limited number (around 2 sqns initially) of latest Mirage (with A2A capability)

It's a full avionics upgrade which includes;

i) Primary and multifunction displays
ii) ADCs (air data computers)
iii) Navigation integration
iv) INS (Intertial nagaition system)
v) VHF, UHF and HF secure comms
vii) Mission computers and stores management system
viii) All out weapons integration include precision guided A2G weapons, Stand off weapons, Anti ship capabilities with some new A2sea missiles and so on.

In short, its an all out upgradation of Mirage capability. I mentioned 2-3 weeks ago, Mirages are here to stay. I said it for a reason.

Mirage will serve as a dedicated strike platform due to its superior flying characteristics, decent payload and fleet wide availability.

Pointless going for another sanctions prone aircraft. It is better
to invest this money on AZM project or go for FC31.
I agree with you partially, these will take more than 10 years to materialize. Rafale will be a major threat in the short term,an off the shelf low cost Typhoon with METEOR missiles will do the job for us.

As long as Pakistan is in FATF, we will not be cleared to acquire any of the western jets.

We recently tried to acquire 3D printers for metal printing of aircraft components. GE (USA) refused citing FATF and other sanctions on Pakistan. Germans refused to provide the raw material, the Japanese did not even introduce us with the technology.

Due to FATF, we are ineligible for a.lot of loans and guarantees which help to reassure the manufacturer for a deferred payment. Since billions of dollars are not transferred immediately, it is done in batches via different sources.

So, basically, the only things the Europeans could approve is the stuff Pakistan can pay in cash upfront (e.g., the ATR-72 MPA conversion in Germany)?

You have a point, lets say for the sake of argument if PAF is interested in Austrian jets,it will at least take a few years from the first signature to the first landing. Hopefully FATF will be sorted by then!!!

Thats really unfortunate

BTW Why can't we get 3D printers from China?

PAF for more than five decades has been successfully operating various fighters, and their variants from three major destinations namely the Chinese, the Americans and the Europeans(French) . This tri nation combination has borne PAF major dividends in terms of costs, availability and reliability regarding the platforms. PAF in my opinion will always seek new/refurbished fighters from three sources without tilting the balance to other two.
On this forum we Pakistanis have debated to death ,the various options PAF can exercise for its future needs and replacements. It is widely accepted that the Block3 and further, will be the best options available for the future upgrades for the Thunders. New Blocks of F16s are also considered along with the further upgrades of the remaining fleet. The Mirage fleet of PAF cannot be upgraded further because of their aging airframes. Further French supplies of hardware are not available owing to massive Indian pressure. This leaves us a question what other European source can be visited, some say the Russians(similar to Chinese tech). Since we have friendly ties with other European Nations why not revisit the Eurofighter Typhoons!!!

Indeed they are very expensive machines, but lately many European nations have considered selling them because of varying reasons, like the Italians and the Austrians.

PAF pilots have had a taste of Typhoons on numerous occasions, with ACM Tanvir Mahmood also flying it. Some say the Saudi and the Qatari airforces do have some PAF inputs on their Typhoon operations and acquisitions!!!!

There has been a valid concern on their affordability factor. Nevertheless there is no harm in seeking the second hand options to begin with. These beauties in the hands of the PAF professionals will seek havoc on the minds of our arc enemy. We will continue to maintain our psychological edge over them for decades to come.:pakistan::pakistan::pakistan::pakistan:
PAF has Tried to acquire EFT in past and discussions moved ahead to the point where PAF actually formulated the framework of acquiring new birds plus surplus airframes alongside the involvement of BAE into Thunder program. It's from time when PAF was looking into East as well as West for new birds. But the deal collapsed ultimately due to "reasons".
