Over 100 Army Special Forces troops dispatched for Sikkim

To carry out relief operations in areas rendered inaccessible due to the powerful earthquake that struck the Himalayan region last week, the Indian Army has deployed over 100 troops of its Special Forces in Sikkim.

Indian Army's Para-Special Forces deployed in nearby locations were brought here and then flown to totally cut off regions in North Sikkim by Mi-17 choppers, Indian Air Force (IAF) officials said.

Over four sorties with 22 SF troops each were flown to Chungthang and from there they were sent to forward locations.

The SF troops are carrying with them special equipment including ropes and other climbing gear which can be used to reach inaccessible places in mountains and help in rescuing stranded civilians and military personnel.

The troops are also carrying stretchers to evacuate stranded people.

The SF men have been divided in various small teams to conduct rescue operations in targeted areas and are also assisting in clearing important roads in the quake-hit areas of Sikkim.

The SF troops have been positioned in areas where the 112 brigade of the Indian Army is deployed. This Brigade which looks after the Indian border with China has been cut off from roads since the earthquake struck the region on September 18.

The army SF troops have been trained to carry out special operations in both conventional and non-conventional warfare.

so this is what SF meant for. WTF the regular army and Sikkim Govt is doing? For every task the the SF gets involved. Is this a counter insergency operation?

the army special forces are treated like thrash by all even the officers of the regular infantry,here are two instances that i have hear

A)A is a senior major in the army and an ex-NDA this is what he had said:
->"do not underestimate the infantry if we have the same weapons as the SF we can match them"

B)B is also an ex-NDA and just promoted to the rank of major:
"there is hardly any difference between a well trained infantry unit. and an SF unit,there are times when the infantry unit can outmatch the SF unit in physical standards"

this is one of the major reasons why MARCOS are so guarded by the navy so that they remain SF and carry roles which they are supposed to.

Saving human life is the only motto of Indian Military. may it be through counter Insurgency or by such things.. Do you seriously believe govt can risk NDRF for such operations?

I sort of get it- these guys are expert rock climbers and mountaineers and would have the necessary skills to operate in this harsh environment, better than most others already invalid in the op.

true in india ,as far as mountaineering and operating in real cold areas you cant beat the para SF,especially col. shekhawats team
