''tribal wars'' or even infighting; the blasts; the extortion -- all of it is (in a different form and dimension of course) similar to what areas of even Brooklyn New York saw in 1930s and even after the second world war:


formation of criminal mafias...in all honesty, that's all they are. But since Pakistan is an Islamic country; and FATA tending to be more conservative (and less developed of course) they hide behind their version of ''Islam'' for nefarious purposes. Because of the poor state of the economy, and because of the fact that there are regional stakeholders who want to destablize Pakistan -- non-Pakistanis/non-Pakhtuns have infilitrated as well. Since the state has decided to take on the terrorists, the state and its supporters have become a legitimate target for them. Therefore they can justify the attacks throughout the country, using their perverted logic



they are a formidable enemy......however, if they were real men, they would at least have a special uniform or way of distunguishing themselves from civilians

we should expel the Uzbeks, Chechens and Arabs....they are stateless people; we dont need them here they can go back to where they came from. Nothing but trouble makers. Unemployed outcasts.




i know fine men in uniform on the ground up there; there are times these militants (dead or alive) are found with bootleg liquor and narcotics

well to be honest with you, if things were my way --there would be mandatory military conscription in Pakistan Nation. 6-12 months of solid military and community service would solve a lot of the problems, believe me.

it would change rationale and mindset of future generations

Turks do it. We should too.


There are issues; I think we are definately one nation and always will be -- but there needs to be effective govt. (local and federal) which can promote more synergy


e.g. why is it that a dam can't be built because one province says one thing and the other says something else; people need to think nation first before anything else

Many Tajik, Uzbek and other central asian mafias are based in KP thats no secret. These people are involed in cross border and trans continental drug and narcotics trade. Contra band smugglers happen to be well armed with their own mini armies..look at what is happening in colombia and mexico..drug cartels have engaged USAF, US Navy and commdos well enough!

i dont think it's AS bad as it used to be; if you look at situation in late 1960s & 1970s, I would say national integration was much worse....the calls for ''Azad'' Pashtunistan/Baluchistan/Sindh/etc. were vocal at times, especially among the foreign-funded socialists who would happily wear a Che Guevvara shirt and hold the red flag.

ours is a young country that I think will mature over time....when push comes to shove, the mere existence of ''necessity'' for one another (provinces) will ensure that even if things get worse --national cohesion will never dwindle or deteriorate


this is where I think the Army plays important role......it's more than just about knowing how to load, aim and fire weapons at enemies; it's also about imparting discipline, and knowing that nation comes first before anything else (clan, tribe, sect, ethnicity --those are not important). You depend your life in the hands of other comrades who are coming from different parts of the country


Pakistan should have mandatory conscription for all Pakistani men; women should voluntarily be allowed to join for community-based, administrative, or non major combat roles


if it is economically un-feasible; or if the military top brass does not feel comfortable doing this -- then instead of military service it should be community service......and those that disobey the rules or try sneaky/chilaak ways to exempt themselves should meet strong sanctions

in isolated cases, individual law enforcement personnels had a hand in facilitating the drug trade ---such as that U.S. Marshal who was found riddled with bullets in Mexico a couple years back


poverty lead to corruption; poverty leads people to do what they normally would never think of doing; unacceptable illiteracy rates never help either!

add unfavourable geography, hostile neighbour(s) and a region AWASH in weapons --and there you have deadly conconction



Uzbeks, Tajiks, Chechen, Arab etc. etc. etc. --- if they dont have Pakistani citizenship or ID cards (which obviously, most do not) then why the hell should they be allowed to stay in Pakistan?

We are an Islamic country; it does not means that other countries should think Pakistan is dumping ground for their outcasts, bandits and jihadis. I am very disillusioned especially by these central asian republic --like Uzbekistan and Tajikistan

2 militants killed, 1 arrested by security force in Swat

Two militants were killed while one was arrested along with heavy amount of weapons during the security forces search operation in Swat here on Saturday.

According to military sources, 3 suspicious persons were trying to enter in Iashary in the area of Swat, when security forces tried to stop them they opened fire on security forces, in retaliation 2 terrorists were killed and 1 arrested by security forces along with heavy amount of weapons.

Well In my opinion Pak Army has done a pretty decent job in Swat. Such a professional operation could not be carried out by any other military force of the world.

Security forces kill 17 militants in Orakzai, Swat

SWAT: In two separate incidents, security forces have killed 17 militants in Orakzai Agency and Swat in the last 24 hours.

Jet plane bombings killed 15 militants and injured 20 others in Mamozai and Garena areas of Upper Orakzai Agency on Wednesday.

Sources say the planes targeted militant hideouts, and that three hideouts were destroyed during the air strike.

Orakzai Agency was a key base of many important militant commanders, including Hakimullah Mehsud.

Recently, military activity has increased in Orakzai Agency, with scores of militants reported dead.

Security forces claim to have cleared 90 per cent of the area of Orakzai Agency and recovered a heavy cache of foreign weapons and ammunition.

In another incident on Tuesday night, in Sherpalam and Mera Mai, in the Tehsil Matta area of Swat, two militants were killed in a clash with security forces. Two rifles and 405 rounds of ammunition were retrieved in this operation.

In Upper Dir, a search operation was carried out after a militant commander Bakht Jahan alias Fauji was apprehended by security forces.

Eight militants were apprehended in the operation and 50 kgs of explosives, three hand grenades and a heavy cache of arms were retrieved.

Taliban commander arrested in Swat

MINGORA: Police arrested an important Taliban commander Sher Ali from Swat’s Matta area, television reports said.

Sher Ali used to look after the Taliban’s financial matters and also provided arms and weapons to the militants, a private television channel quoted the police as saying.

However, another report said Sher Ali was involved in various incidents of torture and was wanted in important cases.

Sher Ali has now been shifted to an unspecified location
