There's no doubt that India, as a nation, love outraging. On social media, in general conversations and against anything that we believe can be outrage worthy.

So, when Amazon started selling doormats with national flags of many countries printed on them, guess who got outraged? Indians.

Amazon Canada faced the wrath of Indians when it posted a bunch of doormats, with the country's national flag printed on them.

"You cannot insult a national flag of India by making a door mat of it. Delete this listing my immediately", "Dont Try to Provoke Indian Feelings By Doing and posting such Type of Stuff On ur website", "how dare u make a matt of our national flag , have some shame and remove immediately" were some of the comments left on the website.

That's not all.

A change.org petition was started, asking Amazon to remove the product from the site. The petition has already garnered support from 2,747 people. The "petition aims to start a campaign to force Amazon.ca to apologize and remove such products from their catalog."

Amazon Canada has not responded to the comments. In fact, the product, sold by Mayers Flag Doormats, is still listed on the site.

However, what is strange is, while Amazon has many of these products with different national flags printed on them, it didn't cause outrage in any country. At least, there are no comments to suggest that.

In fact, a bunch of Indians have gone and commented on Amazon India where a door mat with the US flag on it is being sold. "Please do not buy this as this is a disrespect of a country. Please boycott Amazon!" reads a comment.

A lot of Indians now want people to boycott Amazon because they are selling products with countries' flags.

It seems only Indians got outraged in all this.

Indian flag-themed doormats in the seller’s Canadian site terming the matter as “unacceptable” and demanded an “unconditional apology” from the e-commerce giant.

The incident was brought to notice of Swaraj on Twitter to which she said all the products insulting the Indian flag should be immediately withdrawn.

She also threatened that inaction will lead to revoking of visas of Amazon officials and not granting further visa to the company people.

She sought the intervention of the Indian High Commission in Canada and asked the matter to be taken up at the highest level.


The doormats featured on the site were described as “Personalised Durable Machine-Washable Indoor/Outdoor” items and featured a stylised version of the tricolour. They were available on Amazon.ca’s marketplace from the vendor XLYL.

XLYL also lists similar doormats featuring the flags of countries such as the United Kingdom and the United States.

The troubling listings for the doormat with the Indian flag were posted on Facebook by Phoenix-based Ratnesh Mishra

NEW DELHI: When External Affairs Minister Sushma Swarajlearned today that there doormats depicting the Indian flag on sale on the Amazon Canada website, she said Indian visas will no longer be granted to Amazon officials if the company doesn't tender an unconditional apology and withdraw all such products.

She added that visas already issued to company employees will be rescinded.

Amazon must tender unconditional apology. They must withdraw all products insulting our national flag immediately. /1

Swaraj's stern warning was response to a tweet sent to her, with a screenshot of the page listing the products.

"Madam. Amazon Canada must be censured and warned not to sell India flag doormats. Please take action," the tweet said.

Swaraj shot off a response to the Indian High Commission in Canada: "This is unacceptable. Please take this up with Amazon at the highest level."

The doormats retailed on Amazon Canada sparked protests from Indians living in the country, and there's even an online petition on change.org.

Amazon Canada has removed the page from its site, but it is yet to comply with the Swaraj's directive.

It isn't the first time Amazon has found itself in hot water for listing products offensive to Indians. Last year, the company enraged many on social media after it came to light that it was selling doormats win pictures of Indian gods and goddesses. That discovery even lead to the creation of the hashtag #BoycottAmazon.

And in 2014, the website was found selling women's leggings with images of various Hindu gods.

I don't think Indian laws apply in Canada. I would be more concerned about this if these doormats were on sale in India. Its their country their rules.

Going by the image it's an overseas seller.They mixed it up with western concept..
