Only 33,000 people declared themselves atheists in the 2011 census that puts India’s population at 1.2 billion.

Nearly half of the atheists are women. And seven out of every 10 atheists live in rural India, the data released earlier this week shows.

That's the smallest number anywhere in the world, especially when India's population is taken into account. I'm surprised at the Atheists living in rural India, I'd thought it would have been in the cities.

Nobody declares it in public.

Infact the census is taken by random government staff visiting home and asking about religion, members and other details and are often filled by inputss taken from womenfolk, elders or the person at home at that time..

In a reservation based crappy system which is present in almost all section, people do fill the name of the religion they are born rather than say otherwise.

So data is far from reality.

Many atheist do not generally declare themselves officially. I can imagine my mom's thunderous look at me if I answer myself as an atheist. Census report in this regard is not accurate.

I am one .... but officially am supposed to be a HINDU, cant be an atheist as per the organisation!!!

It tickles me to start changing my religion ever so often since am ordered to have a religion...

Number is likely to be much higher, I browsed India Reddit which has 200,000 subscribers and the majority of them were atheist.

here in PDF also, I am, @gslv and @Joe Shearer are others who have declared their love for themselves only !!!
