New Delhi: The BJP today sought to defend the government's move to promote Hindi, by saying it seeks to bind the nation together and should not be construed as an "insult" to English. ( but rather as an insult to regional languages)

"Hindi is the national language and is the heart of the country. Priority to Hindi cannot be (construed as) an insult to English. The government's initiative for according priority to Hindi and regional languages is a welcome step," BJP Vice President Mukhtar Abbas Naqvi said.

He said Hindi is a mixture of different regional languages like Tamil, Telugu, Malayali, Gujarati, Bengali, Assamese, Urdu and other regional languages. (?)

Mr Naqvi said that it was unfortunate that despite Mahatma Gandhi, Jawaharlal Nehru, Deen Dayal Upadhyay and Rammanohar Lohia's efforts to propagate Hindi to connect the people of different parts of the country, the previous governments have not taken enough steps to promote it.

"This time, the government is honestly doing everything to promote Hindi," he said. :(

"There is no conflict between Hindi and English. If somebody is opposing Hindi, it is not the right thing because they have to understand that Hindi and other regional languages have not got their proper right in the past," (?) Mr Naqvi said.

Two Home Ministry circulars seeking to promote official language Hindi in the social media has raked up a controversy with DMK accusing the Centre of imposing the language on non-Hindi speaking sections.

While the government's decision was attacked by DMK chief M Karunanidhi, Union Minister of State for Home Kiren Rijiju had said yesterday that he will promote the use of Hindi in all official work and public life.

Home Minister Rajnath Singh had, however, sought to down play the controversy by saying the Centre will promote all languages of the country.

The Home Ministry's official language department had issued a circular on May 27 asking all Ministries and Departments, public sector undertakings and banks to give prominence to Hindi on official accounts in social media.

"....All officers and employees who operate official accounts on Twitter, Facebook, Blogs, Google, YouTube should use Hindi and English languages. Prominence should be given to Hindi," Director, official language, Avadesh Kumar Mishra wrote in the directive.

Another circular announced prize money of Rs. 2,000 to two employees who do their official work mostly in Hindi. Rs. 1,200 and Rs. 600 will be given to the second and third position holders respectively

Tamils like yourself and and others claiming that Hindi is being imposed upon them and they are being forced to learn it. Tamils have been starting such threads often now but whenever someone asks them how it is being imposed there is nothing to show.

Also, this threads is about members like Sriram claiming that Tamil is better than Hindi in some way.

I am just trying to understand the roots of this insecurity of our Tamil bros but language racists like Sriram just turn the discussion to an ugly direction.
Chief!....All Indian languages are important...When I say imposed....we dont want to see Central Government buildings in TN have Hindi boards like in the late 1960..that's where the problem started....In fact me being from Chennai...actually want all Tamilians to learn Hindi....because when that happens...we can then go up north and take all your high paying jobs as well....that's a good thing..it creates more competion.

Late 1960s right ? Nothing like that is happening in the present right ? If it happens then you have every right to protest. Just don't insult other languages.

For high paying jobs in the North, you need to know good English , not Hindi :)

Learn Hindi or leave India.
That is a very ignorant, arrogant and not to mention, a very stupid statement!
India has always been a land of multiple languages and the assimilation of all these people speaking such varied rich languages makes India a distinct nation compared to many others!

Aren't you over-reacting a bit?

If you have an issue with the central govt employing Hindi as a means of communication (other than English), you seem to have woken up a little late. Isn't it already the norm for most ministries and central government agencies to have websites which are available to netizens only in Hindi and English. You should have been up in arms, threatening regional discord, disparity and discrimination much earlier.

Other than perhaps symbolism, the latest move to encourage Hindi on social media is hardly going to have any impact on our freedom to continue to learn, read and speak the relevant regional language. Besides, I highly doubt that the modi administration, which has it hands full with the task of reviving the economy would want to toy with such issues. After the massive mandate, the risk-reward ratio in terms of political capital just does not warrant reminiscing the ugly developments of the 60s.

Relax my south indian brother.

And PS - we don't have very many high paying jobs up here that require hindi. English all the way, my brother.

Unfortunately, with over a billion population, we should expect a lot of such narrow minded stupid people among our midst. Fortunately with the freedom of speech rights, such people can freely voice their thoughts and let the rest know who they are. See, a very good use of freedom of speech!!!

What reality what facts ? Except for your verbal diarrhea and severe case of inferiority complex you haven't shown anything here. Again nobody asked you to learn Hindi compulsorily. Just a figment of your imagination arising from your insecurities.
