A security personnel of elite Cobra battalion was killed and three others were seriously injured in an encounter with Maoists at Gangalur in Bijapur district about 350 km south of Raipur late on Friday night.

According to the CRPF inspector general Zulfiquar Hasan, the incident occurred when the joint party of the CRPF and the state police was on combing operation in the remote interior of Gangalur.

“The encounter took place at around midnight. One Cobra personnel was killed. Further information is awaited”, Hasan told Hindustan Times. The Cobra (Commando Battalion for Resolute Action) is a specialized unit of CRPF.

According to the Bijapur police the rebels opened fire on the party near Ekalmeta village close to the Cobra battalion base camp. The three seriously injured troopers are to be shifted to Maharani Hospital in Jagdalpur, said the police. The forces recovered the body of a Maoist from the encounter site.

On Friday, the guerillas killed a head constable of special task force (STF) in an encounter in Sukma, south Bastar.

The seven districts of Bastar zone, south Chhattisgarh, have a strong presence of left-wing extremists.

3 also died a few days ago to Maoists.. India has a insurgent problem

RAIPUR: Maoists killed three personnel of the Chhattisgarh Armed Force (CAF) and critically injured one in an attack on those guarding the installation of public broadcaster Doordarshan at Maranga—about 10km from Jagdalpur town in the conflict-ridden tribal Bastar region. The incident occurred shortly after midnight on Saturday.

It's for the first time that the Maoists have attacked a government media centre. A group of about 10 to 15 Maoists, who apparently came on motorcycles, cut the barbed wires around the installation at 1.45am and stormed the premises. The broadcaster's installation is about 240km from the state capital Raipur.

"The incident took place inside the premises of the transmission centre," inspector general of police (Bastar range) Himanshu Gupta said. The deceased have been identified as Vasudev Sahu, Alexander Lakara and Sylebsus Ekka. Mazhar Khan, who sustained critical injuries, has been airlifted to the state capital where he has undergone a surgery. His condition is said to be extremely critical.

"Maoists have not damaged any of the installation of Doordarshan nor harmed any transmission staff," said a spokesman of local Doordarshan Kendra (DDK). Director general Doordarshan Tripuri Saran and their engineering chief R K Sinha have already reached Raipur. Both the top officials will visit DDK centre at Jagdalpur to take stock of the situation.

Prasar Bharati chief executive officer Jawahar Sarkar had a telephonic conservation with state chief secretary Sunil Kumar during which the former informed that Prasar Bharati would provide all assistance to the families of the security personnel killed and injured, official sources said.

The attack comes a day after the state government extended its ban on the Communist Party of India (Maoist) and its six frontal organizations by another year under the provisions of Chhattisgarh Special Public Security Act-2006.

The state had banned these outfits for the first time in 2006 and it has been extending the ban every year. Besides, the rebels had pasted posters and displayed banners at Geedam in Dantewada district, threatening to eliminate senior Congress leader and former leader of the opposition in the assembly Mahendra Karma, BJP MLA from Dantewada Bhima Mandavi and four others.

Left wing extremists, in an apparently changed strategy, have stepped up violence particularly after the elite Greyhounds of Andhra Pradesh police recently gunned down nine Maoist leaders in Sukma district. Instead of resorting to major attacks, Maoists have now formed small action groups to hit at their targets, an intelligence official said.

UPDATE ON STORY, PIGS BEING SLAUGHTERED. LONG LIVE INDIA, DEATH TO HER ENEMIES!

Raipur, May 18: Eight villagers, including suspected Naxals and a securityman of elite Cobra battalion, were killed in a gun-battle between security forces and the ultras in Maoist-affected Bijapur district in southern Chhattisagrh.

"Eight villagers, including suspected Naxals died, apart from one security personnel, in cross-firing between security forces and Maoists late on Friday night in the forest near Edesmeta village (under Gangalur police station)," Additional Director General of Police (Naxal Operation) R K Vij told PTI today.

Maoists tried to use some villagers as human shields during the encounter, the ADG said.

Of the dead villagers, some were suspected to be members of Jan Militia group of Maoists, the ADG said, adding their identities were being ascertained.

The killed Cobra force jawan was identified as Devprakash Singh.

The encounter took place when the Cobra (Commando Battalion for Resolute Action) battalion 208, a specialised unit of CRPF, was on a combing operation.

On seeing them, the ultras opened fire, killing Devprakash. Security forces retaliated, which forced the Naxals to flee to the denser part of the forest, the ADG said.
