ISLAMABAD: After three weeks of hiatus, the government on Thursday notified up to 143 per cent increase in natural gas tariff with the aim of generating about Rs111 billion.

The federal cabinet had approved the tariff increase on Sept 17. On Thursday, the Oil and Gas Regulatory Authority (Ogra) issued for the formal notification with back dated effect from Sept 27.

An official said the tariff was increased by an average 35pc even though they varied to various categories. The move would generate about Rs95bn for Sui Southern Gas Company Limited and Sui Northern Gas Pipelines Limited and another Rs16bn to the federal government on account of general sales tax. The impact of Rs58bn – determined by the regulator but not passed on to consumers – would be carried forward in the next price adjustment, he said.

Speaking at a news conference on Thursday, Minister for Petroleum Ghulam Sarwar Khan said the substantial tariff increase was necessitated by a five year freeze imposed by the PML-N government.

According to the Ogra notification, the government also created seven slabs of residential consumers instead of existing three slabs. Domestic consumers falling in the two highest slabs would be worst off because they would be charged at the highest rate among all consumer categories. Their price has been equalised with imported LNG.

The price of 6th slab of up to 500 cubic meters and 7th slab of more than 500 units has been scaled up by 143.33pc to Rs1,460 per million British thermal unit (mmBtu) from Rs600.

The monthly gas bill of 500 cubic meters would surge from Rs12,500 to Rs30,340 and further up to Rs35,500 because of 17pc GST impact. Only two percent consumers or 226,129 fall in this category. Likewise, the monthly bill of more than 500 cubic meters would increase from Rs15,000 to Rs36,400 and further beyond 42,520 per month with addition of GST.

A new slab of 50 cubic meter monthly consumption was created. The gas rates for this slab were increased by 10pc from Rs110 per mmBtu to Rs121. The monthly bill excluding taxes would increase from Rs252 to Rs275. In normal circumstances (other than winters), 3.56 million or 38pc consumers fall in this slab, the minister said.

people whose spending exceed Rs 1k/month for mob use are only small percentage.
Roads? From Vehicle yearly to Ring Road to High-way everything is taxed.
why not just shutdown metro project and saved billions of rupees each year. you can impose toll for people to use metro dedicated track.

If possible improve your tax collection system. becuasetax alrady are too high from 17% services too everything.

Also Shutdown Govt. run companies making losses and downsize govt employees. you are already paying them high price nothing wrong if they do double the work. Govt. empoloyees is making more money then people doing private job.

Reduce subsidies and Govt. exp & improve tax system not increase but correct it. if you can't then enjoy the music.

An Agri based country with huge population and depleting storage capacity which heavily relied on Water from Glacial melt if for that nation new highway are more important(when old highway already exist) then Dams then that nation deserve much worst.

Road will not give you anything but cheap energy will.
Our textile suffer not because of order but cost of production is high.
Our emerging Industry poultry sector can't export primary processed chicken because cost of production is too high although Hilal Market is Huge.

I also noticed a massive campaign online where videos have been uploaded telling Pakistanis that some Rich Pakistani will donate all his wealth or someone will give money to to Pakistan this and that the only purpose from such videos is discourage the mindset of simple Pakistani or some people were demanding something from Government some favors before they give back some money

There is literally an active campaign of such videos initially I thought I was imagining it however going thru Youtube videos I was easily able to see how many of these videos were uploaded where people were being told , Pakistan's problems are solved some Rich Pakistani will donate Billions etc

90% of Pakistanis think if you are overseas you have a castle and gold hidden in banks and that is simply not true ..... 99.9% of oversea Pakistanis work 1 or 2 Jobs and Pay international taxes and also end up sending money to Pakistan

a) Permits (Small shop permit)
b) Toll Charges on Roads (Taxis , Busses , Trucks , Cars, Motor bikes people who avoid taxes)
c) Qurbani Animal (Permit)
d) Cell phone (Recharge Tax)

As Prime Minister Imran Khan stated Pakistanis only 0.14% people pay tax in population of 200,000,000 Million people

Pakistan has moved into a New Territory where 30% our GDP is used up to pay Loan Interest
and this cannot go on forever like that CHANGE is must

World wide people take pride in Tax payment and until that mindset changes we will need to enforce permits and toll charges

The tax filing and collection system is not working, this idea of Pakistani sitting down on Saturday and then doing their tax paperwork in Pakistan does not works clearly shown by 0.14% of population who pay taxes not even 1%

Alternative and only means left

• PERMIT / SERVICE CHARGES / TOLL ON ROADS / QURBANI RIGHT TAX / Cell phone charges need to be done

Trust me this works

• Each city in nation makes money
• Less cars on Road
• More people Travel on Buses or Trains
• Reduces , Car theft / Crime as every one is photo graphed as you pass thru the check points

THERE IS NO SECRET ALIEN TECHNOLOGY WE NEED TO GO TO WORLD BANK OR IMF TO DO THIS SIMPLE THING ..... just a a military/police Checkpoint , you pay taxes and you go use roads otherwise you park your vehicle at home and walk to work or take bus to work


People pay 5$ per trip thru these gates in USA/Europe/Japan

I propose a 100 rupee 30 day pass for Pakistan it would be reasonable
