Interesting, i never knew that, but thank you for sharing that information with me, @Dungeness . As a navy guy myself, i have respect for the development of the PLAN as a credible force , and a great power broker in the region, imho. While i cannot deny that the JMSDF is designed to counter the threat(s) that the PLAN may potentiate , there is no denying that professional members of the JMSDF have respect for the PLAN , and consider it a potent force in the region. I suppose the growth and quality of the PLAN is more of a reason for many of us to learn to work with each other and complement each other's security objectives. I suppose the goal should to harmonize each other's external defense objectives to stabilize the region, rather than antagonize.

Hehehe.

The weirdest part about watching this is knowing the Liaoning is just 30 feet longer (that's less than half of the length of the plane taking off) than a 1945 era Midway class aircraft carrier (which by the way had catapults added in the 1950's).
So you are implying HMS Queen Elizabeth carrier in 2017 is still inferior to your 50s midway carrier since she has no catapult?

Fairly old already. @Nihonjin1051, where have you been? Living under rocks? haha :)

Hahaha, hey, at least i'm giving your side some recognition here. Be nice ;)

No, because its not practically the same. Elizabeth class will be armed with F-35 Class B, which is armed with VSTOL, hence, it will no longer require catapults.

Well Britain used to have catapults with their 37,000 ton Audacious class carriers (flying F4 Phantoms and others). They then switched to ski jumps for their new Harrier jump jets. Are people going to argue that switching to Harriers from say F4 Phantoms sized aircraft was an awesome move? I'm sure cost and maintenance was a big factor. No wires and no catapults saves a lot in costs.
