Offensive Racial slur used by The News

Am posting this not so much for the news it contains but for its title. I always thought **** was a word not appreciated by pakistanis as indicated by "****" here while a Pak daily uses it..


**** gets 15 years in US jail for aiding Taliban


WASHINGTON: A Pakistani national, who entered the US on a student visa, has been sentenced to 15 years of imprisonment for conspiring to help the Taliban and illegally possessing firearms, a Justice Department statement said.

Adnan Mirza, 33, who entered the US on a student visa to attend a local community college in 2005 and 2006, was convicted in May 2010 following a jury trial of all nine counts charged.

Beside the imprisonment, he was also been fined USD 1,000 for each of the nine counts of conviction by Senior District Judge in Houston Ewing Werlein yesterday.

As a foreign national with student visa, Mirza was not permitted by federal law to possess firearms while in the United States, the statement said.

An FBI undercover investigation found that Mirza and others intended to send funds to the Taliban and had engaged in weekend training and practice sessions with firearms to prepare for "jihad" on six different occasions beginning in May 2006 at a location on the north side of Houston.

The investigation was conducted by the Houston office of the FBI with the assistance of Immigration and Customs Enforcement.

On news. If anyone mess with the law will get punished. Don't mess with it. These few creates problems for many others. Also media only publish news in which people are convicted. never heard of news in which some one is set free because it might not make that much of a news.

For me he is another person who broke the laws and got what he deserved.

There are many registered members on this forum and other popular Pakistani forum with **** in their user titles.

Word is not appreciated by staff, only on this forum. Not all Pakistanis have problem with **** word.

It's short version of saying a person is from Pakistan. We say Brit for British, Turk for Turkish etc. You can make anything offensive if you want to.

It's the intent that lies behind the word that makes it hateful.

The question is: do you find it racist? If I were from Pakistan, I would not find '****' racist. I'm from India, I find '****' racist, as I would feel that I was being called something simply based on my appearance.

If it is MEANT to be racist, then it IS.
If it is not meant to be racists, but it is taken to be racist, then it IS.
If it is not meant to be racist, and is not taken to be racist, then it ISN'T.

I have noticed that a Pakistani refering to another Paksitani as P??? is not considered a slur. Only if a non Pakistani does that.. Something like n igger being a slur only if a white person uses it, but African Americans use it to refer to each other quite openly..

Can some of the Pakistani friends throw some light on it?
