Reverse psychology is a favorite ploy of the NRIs. It only works on "boys", or on fellow-NRIs (but not all of them by my observation). So easy on the caps.

The case of Taiwan today hinges comparatively little on factors outside of China and Taiwan. The mere fact that you may have served in Northern Ireland doesn't imbue in you automatic insight into all internecine conflicts in distant lands.

For the record - I, for just one person, have always maintained that an independent Taiwan (de jure or de facto makes no real difference) represents the best interest of the broadest number of Chinese people - in a loose, "ethnocultural" sense of the word.

The CCP had a choice to make in the early 1950s after its landing debacle in 金门, during which 8500 PLA troops were annihilated - I am sure that's what you were alluding to in an earlier post. After that they turned to Stalin and obtained permission to "lease" Soviet vessels and landing crafts. Crucially at that juncture, Americans had decided that any support of the KMT regime was simply not worth their dime given the latter's lackluster performance (to put it mildly) in the civil war.

Then came the Korean War, and Mao made a choice. Americans made a choice correspondingly, which was to commit themselves politically and militarily to prop up the ROC. I personally believe the choices were not bad for everyone, except for the war dead and for the North Koreans even though they started this ball rolling without consulting the PRC in the first place (but still, the PRC has a "moral" obligation to NK to this day).

That's why my deceased grandfather used to say: the PRC "opted" for Korea over Taiwan.

But things have moved on. The "tussle" over Taiwan has always involved China and Japan to a greater extent than China and the US.

But the US, by virtue of its nature, plays the "bad cop" even if it's really the good cop.

The CCP's reaction is predictable and entirely predicted - I might even say obligatory. If one has put up a Rain-man's act for so long, one'd better be prepared to act "autistic" at a moment's notice. It's like the Queen saying "she is not amused" even when she is laughing her royal noggin off behind that frigid facade.

As you know, the yeomen won't have any other way.

Only the "boys" (ahem) go over this charade. Let's see: a grand total of 114 Patriot missiles? I initially thought they meant launchers with an "unlimited" supply of missiles. But everywhere I read it says 114 missiles. Well these better be "MIRV" Patriots since their duty was to counter 4000 short-range missiles.

Not to mention the 10's of thousands of 3-400km+ rockets. Apparently with the Beidou, GPS-guided cruise missiles have arrived on scene as well.

But Taiwan is supposed to sleep tight on 114 "Patriot-3" missiles.

No diesel submarines, no Aegis destroyer (unless not reported), no attack helicopters.

Very Obama indeed.

But the "Rain man Party" will still put on his show, since the "boys" around here demand it. And I bought a ticket, too!

BTW, PRC is not the US, and that's why the PRC will not and should not have a physicial "global reach". Mao got tangled up slightly with the Shining Path and what not (or more likely the other way around). No lasting good has come out of it.

Ignoring repeated solemn representations made by China, the U.S. government on Friday notified Congress of its nearly 6.4 billion-U.S.-dollar arms sale package to Taiwan.

The sale is a wrong decision, which not only undermines China's national security interests and her national unification cause, but also once again hurts the national feelings of the Chinese people.

Moreover, it also will cause serious damage to the overall cooperation and relationship between China and the United States.

Frankly speaking, U.S. arms sales to Taiwan have become a chronic disease that has been disturbing China-U.S. ties for a long period of time.

In the August 17 Communique jointly issued by China and the United States in 1982, the U.S. said clearly it intended to gradually reduce the sale of arms to Taiwan both in quality and quantity, leading to a final termination of such sales.

Although those words are crystal clear, this time the U.S. once again stubbornly made a wrong decision to plan a new arms sale to Taiwan, seriously violating the principles of three Sino-U.S. joint communiques, especially those of the August 17 Communique.

Such an act violently interferes in China's internal affairs, seriously undermines China's national security and her national unification cause, and thus inevitably casts a shadow on China-U.S. relations.
The Taiwan issue is closely related to China's sovereignty and territorial integrity, her core national interests, and the national feelings of the 1.3 billion Chinese people.

The China-U.S. Joint Statement points out that "the fundamental principle of respect for each other's sovereignty and territorial integrity is at the core of the three Sino-U.S. joint communiques that guide China-U.S. relations.

"Neither side supports any attempt by any force to undermine this principle. The two sides agreed that respecting each other's core interests is extremely important to ensure steady progress in China-U.S. relations."

The words are still echoing but the U.S. government broke the promise and acted in a way that seriously undermines the core interests of China.

As a result, it is totally reasonable to suspect the sincerity of U.S. pledges on "respecting each other's core interests.
With efforts made by compatriots on both sides of the Taiwan Strait, recent years have witnessed more frequent cross-Strait dialogues and exchanges, and closer cross-Strait economic and trade relations.

The cross-Strait relationship has started to walk on a path of positive interaction.

The U.S. has said repeatedly that peace between both sides of the Taiwan Strait is "in the interests of the United States" and it welcomes peaceful development of cross-Strait relations.

It has also said, many times, that it hopes both sides of the Taiwan Strait strengthen their dialogues and interactions in economic, politics and other areas and establish a more positive and stable relationship.

However, while the entire picture of the cross-Strait relations became brighter, the U.S. made a new decision on an arms sale to Taiwan.

The decision not only runs counter to the mainstream will of pursuing development and cooperation among the people on both sides of the Taiwan Strait, but also exposes the U.S. usage of double standards and hypocrisy on major issues related to China's core interests.

China and the United States, both world powers, have broad common interests and important responsibilities in a series of major issues related to peace and development of each nation and all mankind.

Despite all the ups and downs over the past 30 years, the overall China-U.S. relationship has maintained forward-moving development, while common interests and cooperation between the two countries have continuously expanded.

That not only brought concrete benefits to the peoples of both nations, but also contributed to world peace and development.

Obviously, the current good situation in China-U.S. relations is a result of no easy effort, and both nations need to take extra care of it.

The global financial situation has been improved, but uncertainties remain.

It requires China, the United States and the international community as a whole to make continuous efforts in a coordinated way.

China-U.S. cooperation is indispensable in solving counter-terrorism, nuclear nonproliferation, climate change and other major international and regional security issues.

The age of our times needs healthy, stable and developing China-U.S. ties.

I thought it was "conspired" to sell half of Japan back to US. But it doesn't look like it now.

When the peoples of Taiwan freely accede to communist control of their lives, America shall cease supporting their defense from such. Until such time, while we recognize the communist government of China as the defacto government of the Chinese people, we'll reserve the right to assist the Taiwanese in their self-defense from their mainland socialist brothers.

America is committed to such despite recognizing that providing for Taiwan's defense needs imposes hardships on our relations with the mainland communist masters from time to time. A small matter in the greater course of things. The PRC understands that, by itself, Taiwan would reduce an invasion of its home into a bloody quagmire that would sap the morale of the increasingly feckless and materialistic Chinese citizens on the mainland while rendering the whole point of forceful reunification moot by the sheer destruction which would encompass both sides of the Straits of Taiwan.

Increasingly, those of the mainland care less about socialist solidarity and simply wish to attain the trappings and illusions of comfort visibly evident in Taipai and elsewhere. Making war on such for the illusion of conquest would be a bloody distractor from the central purpose at hand.

With each passing day the Peoples Republic Of China loses the brittle facade of internat'l socialism and comes that much closer to just another running dog neo-imperialist paper tiger entity.
