China's recent military actions off the southwest coast of Taiwan have been denounced by Taiwan as a "blatant provocation" and a danger to regional stability. When China's military unexpectedly declared a "live fire training" zone on 26 February 2025, around 40 nautical miles (74 kilometers) off the coast of Taiwan Taipei reacted angrily. In the Taiwan Strait region 32 Chinese military aircraft and Chinese warships were taking part in a joint combat preparation exercise.
Taiwan's defense ministry described the exercises as risky putting international commerce and aviation safety at risk. The drills were perceived as a component of China's larger effort to exert pressure on Taiwan which Beijing asserts is its own territory. Taiwan responded by sending its air sea and land forces to keep an eye on situation and take appropriate action reaffirming its determination to protect its sovereignty.
Incident illustrates how tensions between China and Taiwan are rising as a result of Chinese increased military presence on island. Some regard these exercises as preludes to an invasion as China aims to show its military might and preparedness for a push toward reunification. Notwithstanding these assertive actions many predict that China is unlikely to conduct a major military campaign against Taiwan in 2025 because of worries about the caliber of its military leadership and financial considerations. However the situation is still unstable because Taiwan and its international allies continue to react strongly to China's moves.
