Nuke deal permits Iran to build ballistic missiles!

No stating and wanting "clear ban" on Iran missile program while describing the USA testing nuclear armed ICBMs as a good thing ...

I would have preferred to have no deal at all but if my president was going to buy into one, he should at least have insisted on a clean ban. Any deal is premature. Your government routinely talks about destroying my country and those of our allies. The government of Iran still illegally occupies our embassy grounds in Tehran that were seized when our diplomats and staffed were kidnapped and held as hostages. That is and always has been regarded as an act of war. You don't sign deals with countries that do that. I know your country has plenty of grievances with the USA as well. I don't blame Iran for the deal. We have a weak president and your government took advantage of that, as they should have.

.
Well, if he does, we won't have any nuclear deal with Iran to worry about anymore!

That would be the least of your problems. I won't care about the nuclear deal if the cost is U.S hegemony going down from within by some nutjob.

How much do you know about the history of events between Iran and US? The embassy occupation is negligible compared to what US has done to Iran.

Chatting with you, you strike me as someone who has a good head on his shoulders and you probably have your own reasons for blaming Obama for this deal. But this animosity between two nations can't go on forever. Governments on both side have spent a lot of their credit on this deal and both are under siege from the opponent wing. There are people in Iran who are also blaming the government for this deal. But overall it is a positive thing for both countries. I don't consider either US or Iran weak for that matter. It was rather a mature move.

Now US may play the game of trying to interpret the deal differently just to make the Jewish lobby happy or keep Iran at check, but as Iran's foreign minster mentioned, this particular article alone took 7 months to be finalized and accepted so there is no misunderstanding on what it meant then and what it means now.

I know quite a bit. My first assignment as a military advisor when I was still a teenager was to RSAF not long after the death of the Shah and the beginning of the Iran-Iraq War. I've read a bit of Iranian history. The problem I have is that the deal is putting the "cart before the horse". We have no regular diplomatic relations with Iran. The Iranian government regularly calls for the destruction for my country and in my opinion, that is NOT a country that I am willing to make a deal with that ends. Iran by continually advocating America and Israel's destruction, in essence, is stating that they are in a state of war with us.

You are a "professional"---You out of all people should be able to differentiate between policy and rhetoric.

In South Asia...both indo-pak leaders use fiery rhetoric like above all the time--but nobody cares lol. We care more about policies (which aren't very friendly towards each other btw).

Its good that U.S policy makers are smarter than what you are portraying yourself to be.

.
@mohsen you see brother, Chrkin has the same interpretation about the meaning of "call upon" that I do.
firstly change the title to:
"Nuke deal permits Iran to build nuclear ballistic missiles"
after all that's what we were called upon, and if you can't find any problem with this claim then I have nothing more to say.

secondly, the one whom Mr Zarif is calling everyday and begging to fulfill his commitments (like lifting swift sanction in reality) isn't Mr Chrkin, that's Mr Kerry.

Iran's Missile Launches Test Durability of Nuclear Deal
The Obama administration’s careful reaction to Iran’s latest round of ballistic missile tests showcases the difficult balance the United States and its allies face in deciding how forcefully to push back, without undermining last summer’s nuclear deal.

Tuesday’s and Wednesday’s missile tests conducted by the Islamic Revolutionary Guards Corps of Iran did not violate the nuclear deal, the administration says, although the actions are likely inconsistent with a United Nations Security Council Resolution related to the issue.

That is because, from the beginning, the Obama administration has taken pains to say that the nuclear deal, which went into effect in January, was designed only to restrict Iran’s nuclear program.

The administration argued that Iran’s nuclear capability represented the greatest threat and that getting Iran to give up its ballistic missile program—which Tehran sees as a matter of national defense—and to restrain its involvement in conflicts across the region—was unrealistic.

The distinction matters, critics say, because even if the deal succeeds in containing Iran’s nuclear ambitions for the next 10-15 years, as it’s designed to, the U.S.’s commitment to seeing it succeed means Tehran can always threaten to walk away from the deal if the U.S. punishes too hard.

“In the discussions of whether to proceed with the nuclear deal, the Obama administration said repeatedly this deal is only about nuclear matters,” said Patrick Clawson, who directs the Iran Security Initiative at the Washington Institute for Near East Policy. “The critics of the administration have said it will be afraid to take actions to oppose Iran’s other destabilizing behavior out of concern that Iran may threaten to back out of the nuclear deal.”

While the nuclear deal does not address the ballistic missile issue directly, an annex to the agreement contains a U.N. Security Council resolution that “calls upon” Iran “not to undertake any activity related to ballistic missiles designed to be capable of delivering nuclear weapons, including launches using such ballistic missile technology.”

This resolution replaced a previous version that more explicitly barred ballistic missile activity.

The Obama administration determined that an earlier round of missile tests by Iran in the fall violated the new resolution and the Treasury Department imposed sanctions against involved individuals and businesses.

Congressional Republicans criticized the administration, however, because it delayed the sanctions until after the nuclear deal went into effect so as not to undermine it.

Former Obama administration officials who were involved with engaging Iran on its nuclear program tell The Daily Signal that the U.S. should act more forcefully now.

“The question is how we respond, because we see missile development as a threat to U.S. allies and U.S. forces in the region,” said Gary Samore, President Barack Obama’s former chief adviser on nuclear policy. “The [previous] sanctions on individuals and groups are pretty hollow. There is a whole range of things I think we should do, and even if these tests do not technically violate the nuclear agreement, we are not inhibited in any way, and we and our allies are perfectly free to do those things.”

Samore called on the U.S. to continue to work with Israel and allies in the Gulf Cooperation Council to develop its own missile defense systems to mitigate the Iranian threat.

He said the most likely action will be for the U.S. to act unilaterally to sanction more Iranian individuals and businesses involved with the missile program. More powerful sanctions that could originate from the U.N. Security Council would likely be blocked by members China and Russia, Samore said.

“The security council won’t do anything because China and Russia would oppose action,” Samore said. “It’s not that they are sympathetic to Iran, but they fear it will undermine political support in Iran for the nuclear deal.”

In addition, the Obama administration is unlikely to re-impose sanctions on Iran’s economy and industry that it removed as part of the nuclear deal.

“Sanctions that go farther like economic sanctions, in my opinion, would undermine the implementation of the nuclear deal and won’t change their behavior,” said Richard Nephew, a former State Department official who served as the lead sanctions expert for the U.S. team negotiating with Iran.

Critics say the Obama administration’s attachment to the nuclear deal has enhanced Iran’s military leverage and that Tehran will continue to act nefariously with the U.S. and its allies limited in how they can punch back.

“I didn’t expect them to include the missile issue in the nuclear deal, because if they did, Israel’s missiles would have to be included, but I think it was a huge mistake to relax the U.N. sanctions on ballistic missiles,” said Jim Phillips, a Middle East expert at The Heritage Foundation. “I think the Iranians are right: They can ignore calls for restraint because this is a toothless resolution the administration agreed to put in place.”

Nephew and Samore defended the administration’s handling of the ballistic missile issue and downplayed the significance of the recent launches.

“There is this idea that the missile program is only significant now, and that’s nonsense,” Nephew said. “It’s been a problem under Reagan, both Bushes, Clinton, and Obama. The fact Obama didn’t take care of the missile program as well as the nuclear program means sometimes diplomacy has limits imposed by who you are doing diplomacy with. At some point, we have to bear in mind that while we had a lot of power and leverage from our sanctions regime, we did not have the power to get Iran to unilaterally disarm [its ballistic missile program]. We just didn’t.”

Samore said he worries more about “concessions” he said the Obama administration made on the nuclear deal itself, including the fact that the restrictions on Iran’s nuclear program expire after 10 or 15 years.

“I don’t care as much about the ballistic issue loophole, as much as the areas where we made concessions in the nuclear area to get a deal,” Samore said.

As long as the Obama administration remains in office, its commitment to the nuclear deal won’t change, and Iran will likely continue to test that investment by misbehaving.

What happens after a new president is elected remains an open question, Samore said.

“The next administration may not feel so committed to upholding the spirit of the agreement,” Samore said. “If the Iranians continue to misbehave, which they will, I can imagine the next administration looking to re-impose economic sanctions that were lifted. Then the Iranians have to decide if they honor the agreement or not. You can imagine a dynamic that leads to the collapse of the deal next year.”

in addition to above article, all America need to do, is to let Mr Zarif continue his hopeless calls. but they are more arrogant.

You are a "professional"---You out of all people should be able to differentiate between policy and rhetoric.

You are correct, I am a professional, which is why your criticism is directed to the wrong target. As a professional, I've learned that the words of a country's leaders, mean something. Your criticism should be directed at Iran's leaders, and the words they freely chose to use, for they are either telling the world the truth or it is they who are imbecilic and totally unprofessional, in such incendiary statements that they issue repeatedly.

.
You are arguing with the wrong person, sir. I absolutely do NOT think a nuclear deal should have ever been signed between our two countries.

and I'm believing that we should make nuke , so if you want argue to Iranian member about anything , come to me , we understand each other very well

Iranians have no enmity towards American people or any plan to destroy your country you can ask your countrymen who have traveled Iran to check their feedback .... you should ask yourself why Iranians harbor grudge against your government and its policies .... what made Iranian to stormed your embassy back in 1979 was a direct result of your government meddling in Iran internal affairs started by military coup in 1953 aimed to topple first elected and democratic government of Iran (which nationalized Iran oil industry) and start of 3 decades of dictatorship ... many things have happened since then what I mentioned is tip of ice berg ....

Unfortunately it is not the Iranian people who command the armed forces of Iran and it will not be the Iranian people who will decide how to use Iranian nuclear weapons, if and when Iran develops them. It will be the Iranian leadership and they have made if abundantly clear in statement after statement that their desire is the destruction of America and Israel.

Again, I would think you should have less a problem with how Americans react to those statements than you would with the fact that your country's leaders continually make them.

@Desertfalcon see? This is one of my countrymen that is not a big fan of the agreement either.

@mohsen jan I was just talking about the interpretation of "Call upon". Rest of the things and whether both sides will remain committed to the deal will remain to be seen. And again that has nothing to do with what was signed on the paper.

I know quite a bit. My first assignment as a military advisor when I was still a teenager was to RSAF not long after the death of the Shah and the beginning of the Iran-Iraq War. It needs to start somewhere and it usually starts, like this deal, where both sides take some steps back from their positions in order to make something work. If there wasn't any bad blood in between, there was no need for any deal either. Like the days before revolution, Iran would continue with its nuclear developments and US would hail it as an example for rest of the developing countries.

I can't see any scenarios where two opposing sides become best bodies first and then make a deal about what they were fighting about. Even in a war, there is a cease fire and peace treaty first and then after years two sides will start to move on and forget about the issues in between. So I think this deal was the only way towards clearing the air between two nations.

Pal we look at it from a different angle , Iranian take the USA as an oppressor and hegemonic power which made a lot of sufferings for them in decades ... As I described in previous post Iranian rhetoric are a response to America policies towards Iran not rooted in hatred if you change we'll change ... even Ayatollah says what I say:

Iran’s supreme leader:
“The slogan ‘death to America’ is backed by reason and wisdom,” the 76-year-old ayatollah said in remarks published on his website on Tuesday.
“It goes without saying that the slogan does not mean death to the American nation; this slogan means death to the US’s policies, death to arrogance,” he said.

I would say the "meddling" went even beyond 1953. Let's not forget Allies not respecting Iran's neutral stance in WWII and occupation of Iran to use it as "Bridge of Victory". Many many Iranians died out of famine because their crops and cattle were seized by the occupying force to feed their soldiers.

Same happened in WWI.

.
I'm not going to go into US - Iranian relations and who hurt the other most because although I can give a very definite and resolute answer to that, we'll still be here for ages arguing.

Anyway...

So Desertfalcon... If you'd rather not have a deal, you are also in agreement with all nuclear sanctions on Iran being lifted, am I right? These sanctions were supposedly designed to "bring Iran to the negotiating table". If the negotiating table doesn't exist, then the sanctions shouldn't exist, no?

But if there had to be a deal and Iran had to completely get rid of its ballistic missiles... would the USAF and USN then shred its aircraft and get rid of its nukes? After all, if Iran has it's most effective deterrent removed, then the US should do the same in order to ensure the peace is kept. Don't you agree?

I would say the "meddling" went even beyond 1953. Let's not forget Allies not respecting Iran's neutral stance in WWII and occupation of Iran to use it as "Bridge of Victory". Many many Iranians died out of famine because their crops and cattle were seized by the occupying force to feed their soldiers.

Same happened in WWI.
As I know about 8 million Iranians were died due to famine caused by lack of food made by the occupying force to feed their own soldiers as you mentioned .... creating Savak by CIA and Mosad , capitulations , supporting Saddam , entering in Iran-Iraq war directly in Persian gulf , sanctions can be mentioned too . ...
