Nuclear exchange is 'most likely' between Pakistan and India, reports NYT.

(Web Desk) – The current focus on North Korea’s growing arsenal obscures the fact that the most likely trigger for a nuclear exchange could be the conflict between India and Pakistan, the New York Times reported.

Long among the world’s most antagonistic neighbors, the two nations clashed again last week before, fortunately, finding the good sense to de-escalate. The latest confrontation, the most serious between the two nations in more than a decade, gave way to more normal pursuits like trade at a border crossing and sporadic cross-border shelling.

But this relative calm is not a solution. As long as India and Pakistan refuse to deal with their core dispute — the future of Kashmir — they face unpredictable, possibly terrifying, consequences.

The current crisis dates to Feb. 14, when a Kashmiri suicide bomber killed at least 40 Indian paramilitary officers in the deadliest attack in three decades in the divided region that both nations have claimed since partition in 1947.

Last week, India sent warplanes into Pakistan for the first time in five decades. Pakistan counterattacked, leading to a dogfight in which at least one Indian jet was shot down and a pilot was captured by the Pakistanis.

Prime Minister Imran Khan returned the pilot to India, in what was seen as a good-will gesture, called for talks and promised an investigation into the bombing. India’s prime minister, Narendra Modi took the opportunity to back off further escalation.

The situation could have easily escalated, given that the two countries have fought three wars over 70 years, maintain a near-constant state of military readiness along their border and have little formal government-to-government dialogue.

Adding to the volatility, Narendra Modi, is waging a tough re-election campaign in which he has used anti-Pakistan talk to fuel Hindu nationalism.

The next confrontation might not end so calmly.

Without international pressure, a long-term solution is unlikely, and the threat of nuclear war remains.

While the Clinton, Bush and Obama administrations aggressively worked to ensure that India-Pakistan confrontations in 1999, 2002 and 2008 did not spiral out of control, the Trump administration has done little but issue a few statements urging restraint. It’s hard to see a role as a mediator for Mr. Trump.

A solution to a conflict that touches so many religious and nationalist nerves must ultimately come from within, through talks among India, Pakistan and the people of Kashmir.

The two countries have crossed into dangerous territory, with India and Pakistan engaging in aerial duels. The next confrontation, or the one after that, could be far more unthinkable.

Here you are guys. This is New York Times, normally regarded as the repository of everything anti-Pakistani. This article is fair, balanced and from Indian POV pro Pakistan.

Here is NYT crediting Pak for having clobberd India in what was counter-attack and then shown maturity by returning the pilot. NYT is doing what Pak always wants. Place Kashmir in centre of Indo-Pak issue and crreate pressure to resokve this issue. This is as good as it gets.

Proves if you have good government and credible foreign policy handled by people who know how to 'play the game' thinks can work better for Pakistan. The west is not intrinsically evil or against Pakistan. It is all about how Pakistan plays it and the underlying colliding self interests of nations.

The PTI government has been ace at playing the foreign policy arena ...

Again Nuclear Bluff?
What is the nuclear bluff ? Your military budget is 5 times higher means you can have five times more ammunition than us ... in a case of war it is highky likeky that even if we outsmart you conventionally but we will deplete our ammunition reserves much earlier than india and if it comes to this then we will bring nuclear weapon to even out the situation ....

It is not like that we are afraid you but we hope for the best and ready for the worst ...

There was a CIA foward looking assessment a few years ago that concluded there would most probably be a nuclear exchange between India and Pakistan in the next 50 years.

I don't think India was really series about escalading into full war....this entire incident was for Modi's domestic political gains. But the affair does prove that miscalculation is possible...Indian military thinkers underestimated Pakistan's counter strike ability.

Pakistan needs to up its wmd and conventional counter strike arsenal. In addition to nukes we need biological weapons. India will be the most populace country in the world with very dense cities...the perfect target for a bio weapons strike. Genetic engineering should make biologic weapons even deadlier. India must know if it attacks Pakistan it could be decimated as well. Current Indian military thinkers think India can survive a WMD strike from Pakistan....let's change that thinking.

It is this type of thinking that makes outsiders anticipate a full exchange.

Armageddon, It is coming sooner or later, if we don't talk to resolve Kashmir.

It's not a bluff. If you attack us and we cannot stop you conventionally, we will use nuclear weapons.
We should finish these scums once for all for the betterment of the remaining humanity... They loved to play proxies war manage to cause deaths of hundreds of Pakistanis.. But at the same time they don't wana take similar doze.... Thus better remove this cancer once for all

We can't currently do that without taking ourselves down with them.
