The Union Cabinet on Thursday gave its approval for construction of a ‘Rashtriya Smriti’, a common memorial site near Ekta Sthal, for performing the last rites of national leaders, including past and serving Presidents, Vice-Presidents, Prime Ministers and other leaders, as decided by the Cabinet.

The proposal to have a common memorial site had been mooted by the Union Urban Development Ministry, in the Capital for the construction of samadhis for departed leaders.

"The Smriti area will provide space for last rites of departed national leaders in future, besides space for a public gathering,” read a statement issued after Thursday’s Cabinet approval.

The Ministry, the nodal agency for land allotment and maintenance of memorial sites, had proposed that the “Rashtriya Smriti Sthal” should come up on the banks of the Yamuna, in between the existing samadhis of Jawaharlal Nehru (Shanti Van) and Lal Bahadur Shastri (Vijay Ghat).

Now a common

Really? What do you guys think? There'll probably even be space allotted to the likes of Raja, Kalmadi, and even that freako Vadhra, being a 'ghar jamaai' of that Italian family ruling India.

And to think that the Armed Forces of India have been fighting for a small space for constructing a memorial in Delhi since the last 20 years without success in memory of the heroes who laid down their lives for the defense of the nation!

Proud to be Indian! Mera Bharat Mahan!

What is this Samadhi nonsense anyways. Hindus don't have tombs, seems like a hangover from the Mughal era, where the kings made grand mausoleums and tombs for themselves.

A politician with a slightest scratch on his/her character should not be allowed an inch there. Even scumbugs like Kalmadi,Raja and company should not be given a slightest of Indian soil.

No separate samadhis; VVIPs now to have common memorial place

New Delhi: There will be no separate samadhis for VVIPs in Delhi as the government today decided to have a common complex for memorials of departed national leaders like Presidents, Vice Presidents and Prime Ministers.

The Union Cabinet cleared a proposal to set up 'Rashtriya Smriti' along the Yamuna river in central Delhi in view of the paucity of space as around 245 acres of prime land in the national capital has already been occupied by separate samadhis of former leaders like Mahatma Gandhi, Jawaharlal Nehru, Indira Gandhi and Rajiv Gandhi.

"Rashtriya Smriti" near the Ekta Sthal, the samadhi of former President Giani Zail Singh, has now been earmarked for performing last rites of departed national leaders in future and for setting up their memorials, besides space for public gatherings.

In the past, separate memorials for departed national leaders were created near Rajghat which covered a large space.

The proposal for common memorial ground had first been mooted in 2000. "Henceforth, Government shall not develop any Samadhi for departed leaders," the proposal had said.

The VVIP memorials of nation's political leaders occupy around 245 acres of prime land along the banks of Yamuna.

Raj Ghat, built in memory of Mahatma Gandhi, measures 44.35 acres on the western bank of the Yamuna in Delhi. The memorial is a simple square stone platform in black marble.

Shanti Van - the Garden of Peace - is the samadhi of India's first Prime Minister Jawahar Lal Nehru occupying 52.6 acres. It has a large plinth covered with a lawn.

Vijay Ghat - Victory Platform - is the samadhi of former Prime Minister Lal Bahadur Shastri. It occupies around 40 acres of land. The victory alluded to in the name of the memorial is India's performance under his leadership in the Indo-Pakistani War of 1965.

Shakti Sthal - Place of Power - is the samadhi of Indira Gandhi. Spread over 45 an acre, the samadhi has a huge greyish-red monolithic stone in the memory of India's first and only woman prime minister Indira Gandhi.

Former Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi's samadhi 'Veer Bhumi' is spread out in 15 acres, while Kisan Ghat of former Prime Minister Charan Singh occupies 19 acres.

Ekta Sthal - Place of Unity - in memory of Giani Zail Singh occupies 22.56 acres.

Samata Sthal in memory of former Deputy Prime Minister Jagjivan Ram has come up in an area of 12.50 acres.

There are some other earmarked areas also for Karma Bhumi in memory of former President Shankar Dayal Sharma, Smriti Sthal in memory of former Prime Minister Chandrashekhar, Uday Bhumi in memory of former President K R Narayanan.

There is Sangharsh Sthal, the samadhi of former Deputy Prime Minister Devi Lal, besides the samadhi of former Presidents R Venkataraman and the Mazar of Maulana Abdul Kalam Azad.

The samadhi of Sanjay Gandhi, the deceased son of Indira Gandhi, is also built next to Shanti Van.

These politicians doent even know the meaning of samadhi ...

Samadhi means a person leaving his body willingly through the means of Yoga to free his soul from the limitation of his body to merger it with the supreme Divine ...

The highest & last stage of Yoga... which a low life creatures like politicians can never achieve...

I think all Nehru-Gandhi family memorials should be consolidated into a modest memorial in a suitable place like Lucknow.

I agree.

To begin with Nehru was the 1st leader of stature we lost after Gandhi, they died with an interval of 16 years. The nation went overboard in forming ' memorials'. Nehru's house which was the residence of the Commander in Chief of India was converted into a memorial. Then the house Shashtri lived on ( Queensway) Janpath was also made into a memorial, followed by Indira Gandhi and so on - at public expense.

Two things need to be done -

1. The offices of all Political Parties should be shifted on the outskirts of NCR - Dwarka , Rohini , MP's should stay in a complex vacating prime property in the center of New Delhi.

2. No more memorials. There should be a separate one for Gandhi - the rest be merged with slots for more.
