Controversial Bharatiya Janata Party lawmaker Yogi Adityanath has demanded that non-Hindus should be banned from entering Har Ki Pauri, a famous ghat on the banks of Ganga in Haridwar, as they might pose threat to the city.

At a ceremony here at Gorakhnath Akhara on Tuesday, the MP from Gorakhpur said, “Non-Hindus might be a big threat to the security of the holy place hence they must not be allowed to enter the Har Ki Pauri area".

The controversial MP also said he would not allow anything else but Ram temple in Ayodhya. He alleged that Muslims were not interested in resolving the issues pertaining to construction of the temple.

The ruling Congress has objected to Yogi’s statement. State Congress president Kishor Upadhyay said if non-Hindus were a threat to the holy city then Yogi Adityanth himself was a bigger threat than Pakistan.

“Yogi must apologise for his statement since it is an insult to the Devbhoomi,” Upadhyay said.

This is not the first time in recent years that Adityanath has sparked off controversies with his comments.

Last year, he had threatened to go ahead with proposed reconversions or Ghar Wapsi in Uttar Pradesh, triggering a row with political parties seeking his dismissal and Prime Minister Narendra Modi's statement on the issue.

Earlier this month, the Gorakhpur BJP MP had also launched a call subscription campaign for declaring cow as 'Rashtra Mata', claiming his demand "embodies the sentiment of every Indian".

Yes. It makes little sense for everyone to go to that particular ghat which is a special place of worship. Especially pesky foreign and Indian photographers. Those carrying plastic, garbage etc should also banned entry. There are scores of other ghats for tourism purposes.

^^All you posters above, we are not a retarded theological country to ban people on terms of faith.

You don't like muslims, ban them from ur home a be the bigots all you want, not in public places that are the property of all of India including and especially minorities.

Don't like this fact, go change the constitution, if majority of India agrees then so be it, let us prove we are an intolerant bunch of neanderthals still discriminating based on man made religious fiction.

P.S.- I have lived in Haridwar and have taken friends from Kashmir to the har ki pauri, the bigots I met saying same stuff as this, were given thrashing in full daylight UP style, before all of us went and had a good swim in the cool waters at har ki pauri.

Awesome. I knew this. We shall begin with banning you. Such hate filled minds and gangsters have no place in any religious place of worship.

In that case ban tourists from taking plastic to ghats.
Haridwar has always welcomed ppl from all walks of lives. It is one of the oldest cities in the world, and everybody deserves an entry to the ghats.
It's haridwar* that comes to one's mind when you say "India".

*Haridwar as well Taj Mahal represent India.

Yes. It should be declared a a plastic free zone. Also Taj Mahal is not used by anyone. People come to a couple of ghats for religious purposes. Yet they are always crowded. Special Puja timings should be there and everyone not doing it will be barred for those hours...that is the early morning and early evening.

Sounds fine as long as there's not a permanent ban on tourists.

Ridiculous. And how are you going to determine who is Muslim and non-Muslim? If you are worried about security, have security check point - God knows, we don't have enough of those. What's the point of a retarded and unenforceable ban except satisfy some vote banks? I can almost see Owaisi screaming at top of his lungs - asking Hindus to be banned from Qutub Minar and thereby satisfying his own votebank. And even if either of such bans are tried, almost any court will strike it down as unconstitutional.
