And we are even doing well in track events where people of African descent usually dominate.

It has everything to do with sports infrastructure.

It's the same reason why the Chinese football team is infamously bad, sheer corruption and administrative incompetence.

problem is cricket mafia has cooerced sponsorship money. i love field hockey and squash and pakistan was a delight to watch; it is just such a shame to see the level they have gone to.

I have tried to explain to friends that in spite of the name, it really doesn't have much soccer in it.

The problem in Pakistan and India is that there is no sports ''infrastructure'',they are only interested in the ''British'' sports.
Hockey,Cricket,Squash and?

Pakistanis as a nation are crazy about Cricket and cricket only, There are handful of people who watch Hockey (National Game). Sports other than Cricket are not being funded, for instance boxing federation only got 300,000PKr.
Nepotism and corruption remains the biggest hurdles.

There are some external factors also

We were olympic champions in hockey once but guess what ? the rules of the game were changed over time , the hockey blades were made shorter and the grass grounds were replaced with astroturf and that hurt Pakistan Hockey quite badly , we never really recovered

In Cricket also the ground and the rules have been skewed in favour of the batsmen , pitches turned into flat tracks , no above the shoulder ball rules and short boundaries

When you lose , change the rules

Also the law and order situation has been used as excuse to deny Pakistan home series.

Anyhow , Other sports like track and field , there have never been an interest and no money goes into those which is a real pitty. Weightlifting and Wrestling is something that could be developed but there is no money and poor infrastructure for those sports as well

And the best part is that the 24 member Pakistani contingent will have 17 " Officials ".

Just a fact , Palestine will be represented by 6 Athletes , one less only.

So does this mean Pakistan won't be sending a team to Rio then?

It is quite decent actually. I also hope Indian contingent will win 12-15 medals as well. Just rub it in when you do so and may be some of our "not so" concerned authorities will also wake up. Do it for me as a neighbor.

Plus training in each individual sports these days is so advanced that you can't expect any medal unless the country has generations of experience.

Its not just training that is the issue but lack of interest we had discus and haveline in our school byt for 2 years we only had one player representing our school in these sports because no one else was signing up for it everyone was interested in joining the school,s football and cricket team
