A day after Supreme Court suspended the government’s order for the transfer of Islamabad Capital Territory (ICT) police chief Jan Muhammad, Information Minister Fawad Chaudhry on Tuesday questioned purpose of holding elections in the country ‘if the elected prime minister cannot even suspend an IGP’.

Chief Justice Mian Saqib Nisar came down hard on the government of Prime Minister Imran Khan and sought a written explanation in connection with the transfer while hearing a suo motu case over the issue on Monday.

Speaking to the media outside the parliament in Islamabad, Information Minister Fawad said, “How an IGP can ignore phone call from federal minister and don’t even bother to call back?” . Chaudhry said there is no point of holding elections and electing the prime minister if the government was to be run through bureaucrats.

The minister was of the opinion that ‘political supervision’ would not be possible if government officials are not going to pick phone calls of the lawmakers. “This would lead to a government by elite and not democracy,” he added.

An inspector general of police is answerable to prime minister and chief minister, insisted Chaudhry, adding that “an attempt was being made to formulate a narrative that government officers can turn into heroes for not picking up phone calls … but, this will create chaos in the country”.

He said the apex court is a respectable institution, where the government will present its case. However, prime minister and chief minister will not shy away from using their rightful authority, he added.

Chaudhry said Minister of State for Interior Shehryar Afridi had been trying to contact the IG about the extensive use of crystal meth in educational institutions. “Mohammad Jan would not pick up his calls or call back. After several complaints, Prime Minister Imran Khan directed his transfer.”

The information minister also addressed issues surrounding PM Imran’s bani gala residence and said at the time of its construction it did not fall under the jurisdiction of Islamabad. He said they were trying to regularise the residence.

‘Threat of fiscal default averted’

The information minister also claimed, during his media talk, that the threat of fiscal default has been averted after a recent Saudi aid package.

He further said that the country was heading towards economic stability and investor confidence in the government’s fiscal policies has increased.

“An increase of 1,450 index points shows investor confidence,” said Chaudhry.

The information minister, referring to Prime Minister Khan’s upcoming official visit to China, said the country is Pakistan’s strategic partner and the visit would start a new chapter in the bilateral relationship between the two countries.

The Prime Minister is the chief executive of the state, hence if the bureaucrats don't perform their duties within their domain, PM has every right to remove him.

which law can prevent SC to stop overstepping into executive domain? no one as the SC takes everything into the ambit of public interest which cant be removed.

Rules are rules, and due process is important. These procedures must endure from government to government if there are to be functioning organs of the state.
