No admission for Sikhs plucking eyebrows: court
NEW DELHI: An Indian court has upheld a decision by a religious body to deny a female student who plucked her eyebrows admission to a Sikh university, media reports said on Sunday. The ruling said faith-based educational institutions had the right to refuse admission to students who did not meet religious standards, as “maintaining hair unshorn is an essential component of the Sikh religion,” according to the Press Trust of India. The policy had been challenged by Gurleen Kaur after she was denied admission to the Sri Guru Ram Das Institute of Medical Sciences and Research in the Sikh holy city of Amritsar.

Kaur was excluded on the grounds that she was not a “true Sikh as she was plucking her eyebrows”, according to the Times of India. Kaur’s petition was supported by male students who had also been refused admission to the university because they trimmed their beards. The Punjab and Haryana High Court, which jointly serves both states, said it was “perfectly legitimate” for Sikh organisations to refuse any benefit to members of the community who did not strictly adhere to religious tenets. Avtar Singh Makkar, the head of the Sikh body which administers the college in Amritsar, said he was happy with the judgement. afp

Gotta admit this is so freaking STUPID! I mean that girl was denied admission into the MBBS (medical) course for plucking her eyebrows? How are unplucked eyebrows going to help her make a good physician? And the High court endorsing the ruling of the body is very wrong! I could understand if the college itself was a religious insititute, but c'mon, its a medical college/univ.
Competitive educational institutes are run by many religious bodies all over India. I haven't seen such terms applied to students from other faiths who get admissions in such institutes! I personally know a few friends' cases.
Such stupidity should be condemned very strongly! I would like to know what the Indian Supreme Court has to say in this matter!

This is the prob when educational institutions are run by religious institutions. They try to enforce their ways.

Reinforces the need to keep educational institutions & religion apart.

Yes absolutely freakin stupid..!!! Its not a religious body.. but an educational institution..!!! They cant enforce their religious beliefs on students..!!! If that is the case in christain schools only christains should be allowed, the rest of the country is surely going to go uneducated..!!! I am surprised by this court decision and i hope this get overturned in an higher court..!!!

So what its a Sikh University, especially made for Sikh ppl. It should work what ever way these Sikh ppl wants it.

So what if its a Sikh Univ ?

In India, things do not happen this way, There are Hindus in Aligarh Muslim Univ & Jamila Milia Osmania, Muslims in Banaras Hindu Univ.

I have studied in a Khalsa College for a while & a Christian school . No where is this allowed. Neither will it be allowed here.

Its just hypocrisy and the 1st step to fundamentalism which will be stubbed at source.

.
soon , even pant-shirt will also not be allowed..
admission to be given to only those True-Sikhs who will be wearing only a KACCHAA !

please ,take it lightly ,
but it was not a joke .

well of course but even in those places u have to abide by the laws. In Pakistan there are certains norms of christian school which is not normal else. But its their school :) Point is nothing is gonna happen if one institution makes these kind of laws. Its call freedom. Everyone has the right to do what ever he wants to. Ms Kaur has the right to shave and Sikh Uni has the right to deny admission. This is not something which we should be making fuss about

Absolutely.I completely agree with you!

See if some one runs it meaning they invest money in it so its their right to enforce law. If this thing happens in public institution its wrong but in private well they have the right to enforce their law. If u don't like it do not join :)

.
BTW if I am not wrong Jamia Millia, Ali Ghar and Hindu Banaras are all Public institution not private

.
hey i get to know that she was trying for religious free quota..!!!! i guess the religious body can impose certain requirments as required by the religious belief if a sutdent applies for seat in religous quota..!!! But i would still say denying a student a chance to study based on his religious belief or on belief is ancient..!! and it would harsh to deny her a seat based on such small ground..!!! However they should have offered her regualr quota seat if she qualifies..!!!

.
it might sound stupid but if its a religious university then u have got to follow religious rules. u cant do much about that. i think court verdict is rit and makes a lot of sense

The point is that what is being provided is a public service. If caveats like these are the start point of admission for education what sort of education is the org intending to provide ?

If a religious org runs a seminary, imposing your religious beliefs is acceptable but not for education on non - religious subjects. Going by this analogy would such organizations ask their wards not to treat ppl of the same religion who have shaved or pluck their eye brows ? If not then why deny admission on this account ?

So long as the laws of the land are not being violated, there is no reason for self imposed moral policing.
