'Night blindness' worries Indian Army

Thu, Jan 14 07:52 PM

New Delhi, Jan 14 (IANS) As the Indian Army geared up for the 62nd Army Day Friday, its chief General Deepak Kapoor expressed concern about the force's 'night blindness' in the area of armoured corps and mechanised infantry.

'My major concern is that night blindness of the army is removed so we are able to fight in the night as in the day,' Kapoor said.

Earlier when his attention was brought to the fact that the Indian Army's tanks have a night vision capability of 20 percent, Pakistan's have 80 percent while China has 100 percent, Kapoor only replied: 'You are right.'

'Projects are already in the pipeline to ensure that we have the night vision capability that our adversaries have. It may take three-four years,' Kapoor added.

The lack of night vision capability of the Indian Army has affected its fighting capability during the night. The deficiency has been persistent since the Kargil conflict.

On a query about the obsolete artillery of the Indian Army, the army chief said that successive bans have delayed acquisition of new guns for long.

'Artillery is a cause for concern. We need to have better guns. Trials for towed guns are underway. Because of bans the process got delayed. We are now acquiring (ultra light) guns through FMS (Foreign Military Sales) route (from the US),' Kapoor added.

The artillery modernisation plan of the Indian Army, which has not bought a single gun for the last 23 years, was derailed when the defence ministry banned seven armament firms including a Singapore artillery major on corruption charges.

While the government gave a go ahead to the trials of towed artillery guns, it has opted for a direct sales route in case of ultra light howitzers, in which the Singapore Kinetics was the single vendor. Ultra light guns are required by the Indian Army to position in the mountainous terrain bordering China.

'I would be happy to get the guns whichever way I can. I do not mind if it comes through Foreign Military Sales. The Defence Acquisition Committee cleared it and we are ready to go for it,' he added.

While the Indians celebrate 62nd Army Day, countrys Army Chief General Deepak Kapoor, just after a couple of weeks of announcing a new war doctrine of Indian army to eliminate Pakistan and China in matter of hours even if it has to fight on simultaneous fronts, outrageously admitted Indian Armys Armoured debacle and expressed concern about the force's 'night blindness' in the area of Armoured Corps and mechanised infantry. 'My major concern is that night blindness of the army is removed so we are able to fight in the night as in the day,' Kapoor said at New Delhi Yesterday, an admission that stunned the world in the back drop of his two weeks old remarks. The situation also forced Indian Defence Minister Antony to chew his own buts as he had been endorsing and projecting General Kapoors announcement regarding the new war doctrine for Pakistan and China Earlier, when his attention was brought to the fact that the Indian Army's tanks have a night vision capability of 20 percent, Pakistan's have 80 percent while China has 100 percent, General Deepak Kapoor admitted this outrageous military debacle by saying: 'You are right.'

Dont be fool! its tactics to buy State of the Art weapon!!

If US sell weapon to INDIA so the posibility of Military hardware balance issue increase in South Asia so better to play game ...

Raise issue that we dont have that we dont have that Pakistan have blaa blaa capablity China have blaa blaa capablity to convence Indian govt to spend more and more money on Military hardware and buy state of the art weapons thats totally BS!!!

sometime Indian Skool chief said "we capable to fight with Pakistan and China at a time and finish war with in blaab laa hours... sometime India skool chief said we dont have night capablity sometime Indian skool chief said blaa blaa thats only Bulllshit.. play game (US -> india) simple....thats the only way to buy weapons!!

Its not possible for India to keep a huge men power even 80% combat ready. Mobilization is beyond its mean. Plus equipment and maintenance is hard hit area. When more then 50% of navel equipment on dock for repairing and lack of parts. Same goes to air force when Mirage2000 has no part in storage and no further contract sign with France for the delivery, if any minor showdown runs on border. General gave good morale boast to its boys. But actual picture is something else.
Since last many years atleast Pak army learn alot after fighting with Taliban, including covert operation and night operations. Plus exploring new ways for proper use of man and equipment. Acquaintance with new provided gear by US govt. Thanks to US govt which gave Pak army a modern touch.

With due respect Haider i dont agree with your statements..you may be pointing out about the submarines and the cancellation of Mirage upgrades..

Every airforce has reserve of parts for any unexpected standoff. Little example of maintenance. India lost two SU30, both were assembled in India....

Maybe thats why the general said he will finish the war in few hours.

Start around day break and finish by late afternoon coz we dont have night capabilities.

Pakistan and China being good neibghours will not say no.

:cheesy:;)

Why finish off by late afternoon, why not by lunch time. You can have lunch at Lahore Jimkhana. Ooh, I forgot you tried that in 1965.

look this is a ploy by deepak kapoor to firstly make his previous statement not look provocative as well as justify the state of the art purchases being made by india from israel & US. so his current statement is actually more worrying then his previous big flamboyant talk!
