Next round of water talks with India in jeopardy

yes but it originates in china and whatever originates in chinese territory, the chinese can do with whatever they want
Yes, that is true, so lets give the same rights to India, why to be a dehati aurat... just coz of a treaty which will die a slow death in comming years.

.
Little to nothing you can do, the threats don't really add up to much, if Pakistan does wage war, it will sure to end all conflicts in J&K, we will be able to find a final solution to the problem at hand. It will only work towards the strategic interests of India.
so india losing all its mega cities in nuclear attack will only work towards the strategic interests of India??????

.
It is in India's interest to unilaterally cancel the treaty and do what China does...

I don't see why we should be tied to idiotic agreements, especially with a country that does not seem to honour "other" bilateral agreements.
Kis K**te se education li ha???? taught you no manners.be relevant and behave

I know one thing..if its going to be a war its going to be on the account of water.Nothing in the world provokes a nation as much as a desperation of survival does and for us the desperation will sooner or later be water. WATER=LIFE.No Water=Death+Death of those whom attempt to seize it.:sniper:

WASHINGTON: The next round of India-Pakistan water talks — that the World Bank offered to hold in Washington next month — may be delayed or cancelled because of India’s refusal to accept arbitration.

Pakistan not only wants the talks to be held as scheduled but is also seeking the World Bank’s arbitration as the guarantor of the Indus Waters Treaty.

But Indian officials told reporters in New Delhi on Wednesday that India was against such arbitration and preferred negotiations within the framework of the treaty.

Pakistan too recognises the treaty’s pivotal role but disagrees with the Indian interpretation, which seeks to minimise arbitration.

The proposed talks will focus on two controversial hydropower projects — Kishanganga and Ratle — over which Pakistan is seeking International Court of Arbitration through the World Bank.

Indian and Pakistani officials met in Islamabad and Lahore this week to discuss three Indian projects on the Chenab River that Pakistan fears would decrease the flow of water into its territory.

After the meetings, Water and Power Minister Khawaja Asif told reporters that talks on the Kishanganga and Ratle hydroelectric schemes would be held in Washington next month, with the World Bank as the mediator.

But officials in New Delhi told the Indian media that they had not received any formal communication about the Washington meeting. They also said that India opposed Pakistan’s proposal for the bank’s mediation or arbitration and would prefer a neutral expert to review the two projects and give his or her opinion.

Pakistan says it wants a decision that is legally binding on both India and Pakistan and such a decision can only come from a court of arbitration and not from a neutral expert.

Late last year, New Delhi suspended talks on the treaty, which distributes the eastern tributaries of the Indus — Sutlej, Beas and Ravi to India and the western tributaries — Jhelum, Indus and Chenab — to Pakistan.

In September 2016, Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi threatened to scrap the treaty after a terrorist attack killed 19 Indian soldiers. Pakistan warned that any such move would be a “declaration of war”.

Pakistan has repeatedly accused India of violating the treaty by building dams on the western rivers. India says that the treaty unduly favours Pakistan by giving it a greater share of water.

“Pakistan wants the World Bank to continue to play its role as the guarantor of the treaty,” an official source told Dawn in Washington. “The Pakistanis fear that India is trying to undermine the bank’s role as the repository of this treaty.”

The World Bank first seemed interested in Pakistan’s proposal for arbitration over Kishanganga and Ratle projects “but may opt out under India’s pressure”, the source added.

Pakistan has also said that it wants a resolution “through the provisions of the treaty, in their letter and spirit”, and “not through India’s interpretation of the agreement”.

A similar meeting, held in November 2016, made little progress as India rejected the World Bank’s terms of reference because, it claimed, the terms favoured Pakistan’s demand for arbitration.

Western rivers onl flows through iok on Indian side but whole of pak so it can provide ver little water to india accept for building super expensive waterworks to provide it to Indian states and sink most of iok in reserves bth highl controvercial and it would b a fraction of what Brahmaputra can give and would push pak to war which would most likel become a nuclear 1 so doesn’t make sense pak didn’t even backed off on afg against ussr or usa to protect its national interests so think would just let india brake its written agreement and india would face no repercussion is a ver stupid thinking on part of Indians their leaders agreed to iwt for indias interest as it prevented water wars and now water war can go nuclear

Do you buggers even know that there is no exit clause in Indus Water Treaty... and India has only stated that it wants to utilize 100% of the capacity allocated to India... so instead of ranting.. push your leadership to create capacity to exploit the share of water allocated to Pakistan under Indus water treaty.

Typing in a bigger bold font does not make your stupid point valid.
does ur veggie class also know that this was in respose to most indian comments on this thread and also rising overall indian thinking that india can break off from iwt without facing consequences as for india has right of 20% annd isnt disputable but dam design should have clearence from pak and appointed int experts that it wont affect much rest of 80% water flow to pak and thats our stand

Pakistani IWT people are to blame.. they have never been able to point valid objections to anything... they opposed for the sake of opposition..... Blame your leadership for failure ... ranting on internet is not going to dismantle an operational Kishanganga dam or get Neelam Jhelam Dam operational...

Pakistan's 3 western rivers,Indus, Jhelum, Chenab and their tributaries has combined flow of 135 MAF- Million Acre Feet per year

1 Acre foot = 12,33,480 litres
Consider water truck with capacity of 40000L
Then Pakistan water can be accommodated in 1233480/40000 x 135million or 416 crore trucks (4.16 billion) or 1 crore 14 lakh (11.4 million) trucks per day.

As far as i know, India's largest dam has capacity of 10MAF.

In order to on/off or divert Pakistan water, we need something of scale of Kariba dam whose reservoir length is 280Km.

Ofcourse, water flow is not uniform year round. India can affect most in dry and rainy seasons but not remotely capable of stopping water.

.
India pulls out of IWT.
Pakistan files a case worth 500 billion dollars.
Pakistan wins.
India says we do not recognize the verdict.

Then?

US did the same in Nicaragua case.
So did China on SCS.
And what happened?

Nothing will happen.

Our politicians have this problem of binding our nation with useless things.

We should simply learn from China and exit all treaties that don't serve Indian interests.

. .
just notify US and China then bomb the hell out of illegal constructions.. If they want it so let it be.

.
Abolishment of IWT is a stick that India will carry to have an upper hand in any future negotiation,Since any efforts for diverting water will take time(years) its better to keep this treaty on ventilator and pull the plug when the time is right.

.
guess its time for china to divert water from indus to pakistan and also while they are at it,divert water from brahmaputra to western china

Ironically the major tributaries and catchment area that feeds Indus and Bramaputhra is well inside Indian territories and China can't do a damn to change the demography. LOL :p:

.
What honour are you talking about ?? To honour a treaty until it is blatantly and unilaterally broken ( Remember Simla Agreement and Kargil :( )

Regarding your Chinese threat, at present both China and India doesn't have the capacity and capability to completely/effectively block and store the west flowing rivers from the Himalayas. Moreover, most of these rivers rises in tibet but what percentage of water does they contribute ? Almost all catchment area is in Jammu and Kashmir, in Tibet they are just stream, in J&k they become actual rivers, so enough of this Chinese threat and please try to learn some facts. But yes, China's can trouble us a little bit by blocking Brahmaputra river in the east, while making an enemy out of Bangladesh for sure. I don't think the Chinese are that dumb. :)
india broke simla agreement the very next year by capturing 8 empty Pakistani posts.
India broke simla agreement by occupying siachin.
India broke simla agreement by moving to UN on issue of mumbai attack.

you broke it every time. Kargil war is connected to siachin where treaty was broken by india,.

secondly even if india broke the agreement we guarantee that either blood or water will flow but we will get our share in liquid form.

Siachen was not a territory that came under any of the agreements, actually it was a demarcated territory and the entire world know the fact, it was Pakistan who started issuing expedition passes to foreigners back in the 1970's and early 80's as if it were your territory. So it never came under Simla Argeement. If you still have doubts revisit the agreement and read it again multiple times and if possible show me a reference of Siachen in the same, until then all your claims are nothing but blatant lies.

Where and when did Mumbai Attacks come under Simla Agreement ? This is the most ridiculous and absurd comment I have ever read on PDF. :(

It was Pakistan who broke all agreements since 1947, from the stand-still agreement made between Pakistan and Kingdom of Kashmir to Simla agreement. Kargil is a blatant violation of Simla Agreement, now those who can't respect an agreement cannot expect others to respect the same for you, period. :-(

Above all, now coming back to the topic, there is a strong reason why Pakistan lost against India in the International court. Because our claims are more strong and genuine. :)
