Delhi’s Nepal script, written in 2006, has now gone completely wrong

Last week, Prime Minister K.P. Sharma Oli laid the foundation of Pokhara international airport, Nepal’s second, being built with Chinese assistance and soft loan. Oli was joined by Maoist chief Prachanda and all major party leaders in a show of appreciation for the Chinese initiative likely to be completed in four years. And in a strange coincidence, this happened during a phase when Nepal-India relations have nosedived like never before.

Nothing would illustrate it more clearly than the “serves-you-right” response so visible in Nepal’s power corridor and intelligentsia when the Organisation of Islamic Countries’ resolution on Jammu and Kashmir was challenged by India with a warning not to “interfere in its internal matters in future”. Nepal authorities had made a similar protest when India and the European Union had jointly asked Nepal to address inadequacies in its constitution at the end of last month.

China making much inroads into Nepal is something even the Indian authorities have come to acknowledge. But what divides the Indian response is whether it’s at the cost of India’s image, influence and interest in its crucially important neighbourhood. Congress leader Mani Shankar Aiyar sarcastically “congratulated” Prime Minister Narendra Modi and External Affairs Minister Sushma Swaraj for having successfully “pushed Nepal towards China”.In a piece with many “dos and don’ts”, Prem Shankar Jha suggested that India shouldn’t be treating Nepal like a “protectorate”. But the senior babus (some retired by now), who authored and literally dictated the course and agenda of Nepali politics since 2005 — with UPA political bosses visibly indifferent — continue to harp that “anti-Indianism” in Nepal is the doing of only a small group of “hill elites” confined to Kathmandu. That only shows the gap between perception and reality as anti-Indianism is visibly widespread from the hills to plains.

Oli and the ruling coalition dominated by the Left are getting positive responses from the people across the country for having stood up to India, mainly for what it has “done without accountability in Nepal’s internal politics”. Although this doesn’t guarantee Oli’s survival in power for long, he’s praised by many for his efforts to oppose the “outside role” (that is, India’s) in Nepal’s politics and constitution-making. In fact, Nepal’s ruling coalition — which had continued to give some benefit of doubt, particularly to Modi, till recently — didn’t take kindly to the EU-India resolution on Nepal’s constitution in Brussels at Modi’s initiative.

The foundation laying of the Pokhara airport — a project that was agreed upon at the prime ministerial level during Oli’s visit to Beijing in March — was formalised with a rare show of solidarity among Nepal’s political parties. Nepal is already considering waving the visa fee for the Chinese.
Indian immigration, on the other hand, has already started “stamping” Nepali passports at airports, diluting the spirit of open boarders and hassle-free movement for all these years
. The relation is clearly losing the much talked about “special” component. The two sides have hardly begun any exercise to address the misunderstandings and the visible fallouts.

Yet, Nepal’s leaders are more confused about how to go about this, since they have been the biggest beneficiaries of the “India-dictated changes”. They have been able to exercise absolute power without accountability — more than the king(s) did in the past.

When India led the initiative for international support for the political movement in Nepal in April 2006, it had two ostensible concerns: First, since King Gyanendra was playing the China card, the Maoists and other key parties, minus the monarchy, would be a more favourable experiment. Second, India would for a long time have the lead role, if not a monopoly, in directing Nepal’s politics. Both have proven wrong.

LOL Some Indians call China hypocrisy regarding Masood Azhar issue and the invitation of Uyghur to democratic conference in India, look on what they did to Nepal, they don't want other to interfere with J&K but interfere on Nepal constitution, basically:

1-they don't want other to interfere with their internal affaire
2-they allow themselves to interfere other country business
3-they don't want China or others to copy their double standard, "do what we said but don't do what we do"...thing

India is nothing but triple standard country:p: ...LMAO

They will, once we close the border and free access to Indian mainland. If they cozy up to China, probably we will have to seal down the border to prevent easy access for Indian maoists.

I'm not surprise that India will do that, you guys did the same to Bhutan by cutting the cooking oil and gas when Bhutan PM met our PM in south America...blackmail is what India's best pressure tactic...maybe one day China can take a page from India's book.

Our national security comes first. What our neighbors think is irrelevant for us. Indian mainland has been their lifeline for essentials and resources for all these times, now if they can get the same from China, then the open border with India is irrelevant for them.

China need to spend a powerful spy network from preventing evil Indian RAW operating in Nepal. Hide them down and skin them alive. India is a evil country proven to use RAW to play its own power in Sri Lanka and China will ensure Nepal will not fall under again.

India will definitely send RAW team to attempt another coup on Nepal. But trust me, any RAW come into Nepal will have their head chopped off immediately by the Chinese. :D

India is proven to be a evil nation

Nepal and China should work to improve the connectivity between the two countries. The connectivity should include road, railway, air, telecommunications, finance and energy.

Last month when the Nepal PM visited Beijing, the following 10 agreements and MOU were signed:-
  • Nepal to use China’s sea port facility
  • Transit transport agreement to be reviewed every 10 years
  • China to build a regional international airport in Pokhara
  • China, Nepal exploring the possibilities of signing a bilateral free trade agreement
  • China to explore the possibility of finding oil and gas reserves in Nepal
  • China to provide economic and technical support to Nepal to implement the project on Pokhara airport
  • China to distribute solar panels in Nepal’s rural areas by tapping its Climate Fund
  • China to build, manage and maintain Xiarwa Boundary River Bridge at Hilsa, Humla
  • Nepal, China to strengthen intellectual property system in both the countries
  • Nepal, China to extend cooperation and exchange information on banking regulations
All these deals were signed in the presence of Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli and Chinese Premier Li Keqiang in Beijing.

Curiously, none of the them involves railway.

who cares what india say. Chinese should be more like Americans. Sometimes to be great you need to do things that are double standard in nature--look at USA. Sometimes you may anger a fast talking big mouth neighbour. If that's the case so what.

Indians are known to be big mouth of the South, not Jimmy Hart so let it be.

Debating with them and posting Indian news is counterproductive. Indian news are full of Brahmin shit to begin with.

@Beidou2020 what's your take?

Wow ! So the journalist has selectively ignored the "1950 Indo-Nepal Treaty of Peace and Friendship" for his TRP? now that's interesting.

Are you saying that now Nepal is a security threat to India?, if your neighbors think is irrelevant than what make you think that India is relevant to your neighbors? I think India is really abusing it geographical advantage, cutting Nepal lifeline for essentials and resources will set an unprecedented bad example to all your neighbors, what happen if Nepal cut water supply and divert it from flow into Ganges river?

The author was being melodramatic, a fine Indian tradition by the way. Seriously though, geography makes it harder for Nepal to trade through China. Goods transported through China will cost more for the simple reason that they have to travel much farther distance. An alternative route will give Nepal a much better bargaining position vis-a-vis India.

When Tibet is fully developed as our coastal cities, supply the essential good such Oil, gas to Nepal will not be a problem. For now India can continue abuse it geographical advantage and anger Nepal, once we bring our pipeline from Xinjiang all the way to Tibet as we did for Hong Kong, Shanghai then India will have no leverage on Nepal

China should heavily invest in Nepal, so Nepal should never be dependent on supa powa India.. same is needed in Bangladesh, Sri Lanka, Bhutan..
